Not being genuine.

For example, social enterprise is "hot" right now. Saying that you want to start a non-profit to save baby seals just because you think Derrick Bolton will be wetting himself when he reads the essay isn't going to help you much if it's coming out of nowhere.

Many people think that adcoms want to hear that you are an analytical wiz and a leader since you were born because you are leading your younger brother by 2 years. :) Don't just write what they want to hear (Leader, Innovative etc etc.). In summary be yourself and stress on the story and it's outcome. Adcoms are expert in seeing beyond the text and judging your potential.

I'm not sure I agree with the "Don't list course numbers" comment. I think it demonstrates that you've researched the school's curriculum and thought of how certain courses could benefit you. Plus, it economizes on word usage!

Students and ad-coms generally know their course numbers.

Mention a course name or two, but not course numbers.

I've seen conflicting opinions on this... I was in touch with a former MIT adcom and he mentioned that course numbers are acceptable.

I just think it makes for poor writing. Who wants to read "I'm especially interested in ECON-C300"? Why not "I'm especially interested in Emerging Market Trends"

You really really think the adcoms have the coursebook memorized?

I think it is perfectly acceptable to say:

"I'm interested in taking ECON123 and ECON124 to expand my understanding of economics in an entrepreneurial setting."

Maybe you can say ""I'm especially interested in Emerging Market Trends (ECON123)" to both achieve clarity and demonstrate that you have researched. Anyway, it is only 1 more word.

Franly, I don't think they will take you in or throw you out just because you quoted "ECON123" instead of "Emerging Market Trends". It is the whole package, the overall style, the complete picture that you are painting.

I suppose it is. Personal preference is all.
