"The resulting lack of substance leads to........". This sentence clearly tells us that presence of substance is an important factor in the longevity of the book.

According to the author, the general diposition of a person is guided by the Frontal Lobe activity. A supports this because it says that the drugs used to treat clinical depression act on the Frontal Lobe. This shows that Frontal Lobe is the progenitor of the disease. If you modify the activity of the Frontal Lobe, you treat the symptoms of the disease.
All other choices weaken the argument.

Intrinsic properties-----> aesthetically relevant
Extrinsic properties-----> Symbolism------> aesthetically irrelevant.
What if Intrinsic properties also "symbolize"? Then aesthetic relevance and symbolism will co-exist in a painting and the author's conclusion will fall apart. Therefore, the author must assume that symbolism is solely an extrinsic property.
