Not getting wrong this time.
It must be D.

Notice that this is one of those rare inversion SCs.

I picked D too because it seemed like the most appropriate and logical

as the demographers would have to know more than what they know now.

But Matt, which rare sc inversion are you talking about, I'd like to know and mark it in my SC pointers so I am not like  in the exam.

Sentence as written. (1) To develop more accurate population forecasts, demographers would have to know a great deal more than they do now about the social and economic determinants of fertility.

Sentence inverted. (2) Demographers would have to know a great deal more than they do now about the social and economic determinants of fertility to develop more accurate population forecasts.

Same meaning. 8-)

economical vs. economic -> narrows down to A and D

"more than now" is incorrect

I chose D by guessing
Was stuck between have and would have.

Reason behind my choice:
would have-means not yet done in the present but needs to be done "sometime in the future"
have-needs to be done "now"

Is my reasoning correct?
What's the diff between have and would have?

My reasoning:

To develop suggests its something they cannot do now, therefore to develop a better model they would have to have a better understanding than they do now.
