To improve RC and CR [#permalink] New post 21 Jan 2014, 00:24
Dear All,

I am preparing for GMAT since 2 months.

1 - I practice at least 2 RCs every day since the beginning of preparation.
2 - 15-20 CRs every day since last week.
3 - Joined coaching classes as well.

Problems which are leading to frustration:

1- In RC, I sometime score full, sometime 60/70 percent and well sometime zero. Average 65%.
2- The main problem is timing which is the main reason of my error.
3- CR, I am good, but again time is something that I am not able to keep up with.

I am really really frustrated..
Any input on it will be much appreciated.

Thanks and Regards

Here are a couple tips. 1) Do at least some of your reading comprehension practice at the end of your studying sessions. This will help you battle fatigue come test day, as RC is where people tend to struggle the most with fatigue. 2) On CR problems, read the question stem PRIOR to reading the stimulus. This is a methodology that Veritas teaches, and it is very effective. It allows you to make the most of your initial CR reading, and not have to reread the problem, thus saving you time. 3) On RC, spend no more than 90-120 seconds on your initial read through. You are only reading initially to be able to answer universal questions (primary purpose/tone/etc) and to get a feel for the passage. You will dive back into the passage for answers to detail type questions. 4) Time yourself and stick to 2 minutes on your CR questions.

I hope this helps!!!

Have you tried out this free resource on how to read through a passage to retain very high comprehension levels? You can efficiently solve RC using this reading strategy: http://www.gmatpill.com/practice-questi ... -guide-rc/

Focus on reading the important points of a passage, then (as GMAT Pill puts it) connect the dots to get the main idea.

Hi ZeeUsuf,

Mental Stamina is so important on these tests yet though everyone recognizes that not many really tackle the problem of improving mental stamina head on.

One technique is standardization of your thought processes. Being very fluent of the terminology of question and passage types helps tremendously so you can quickly identify, categorize and bring up standard protocols to evaluate a question.

Too often students learn the rules but don't actively apply them in an ordered process. Thus they don't leverage the tremendous mental energy savings that are there.

thanks,

Clearmountain
