Dear Friends,

Here is a detailed explanation to this question-

mbunny wrote:
To meet the rapidly rising market demand for fish and seafood, suppliers are growing fish twice as fast as their natural growth rate, cutting their feed allotment by nearly half and raising them on special diets.

(A) their natural growth rate, cutting their feed allotment

(B) their natural growth rate, their feed allotment cut

(C) growing them naturally, cutting their feed allotment

(D) they grow naturally, cutting their feed allotment

(E) they grow naturally, with their feed allotment

Choice A: This answer choice incorrectly compares the verb "growing" with the noun "natural growth rate". Moreover, as the noun "growth rate" is an uncountable noun in this context, it cannot be modified with the phrase "twice as fast". Finally, it is unclear which noun the pronoun "their" refers to. Thus, this answer choice is incorrect.

Choice B: This answer choice repeats the errors found in Option A and breaks parallelism between the verbs "growing" and "raising" and the phrase "their feed cut". Thus, this answer choice is incorrect.

Choice C: This answer choice incorrectly compares the verb "growing" with the gerund phrase "growing them naturally", breaking parallelism. Thus, this answer choice is incorrect.

Choice D: This answer choice maintains proper comparison, parallelism, and pronoun use throughout the sentence. Thus, this answer choice is correct.

Choice E: This answer choice breaks parallelism between the phrase "with their feed cut" and the verbs "growing" and "raising". Additionally, this answer choice repeats the pronoun ambiguity error seen in Options A and B. Thus, this answer choice is incorrect.

Hence, D is the best answer choice.

D it is

To meet the rapidly rising market demand for fish and seafood, suppliers are growing fish twice as fast as their natural growth rate, cutting their feed allotment by nearly half and raising them on special diets.

a. their natural growth rate, cutting their feed allotment (OUT)
b. their natural growth rate, their feed allotment cut (OUT)
c. growing them naturally, cutting their feed allotment (we can shorten: suppliers grow fish twice as fast as they grow them naturally, but not suppliers grow fish twice as fast as growing them naturally -> so OUT)
d. they grow naturally, cutting their feed allotment (parallelism with raising)
e. they grow naturally, with their feed allotment (forbids parallelism with rasing -> so OUT)

B and E can be taken out because of lack of parallelism
Among A, C and D, A can be taken out because of faulty comparision

For ex:- The correct way is - I'm going twice as fast as you do. the elements of comparison( in the bold) should be consistent(subject or object but not both). The ideal comparison should be between a subject form and a subject form or between an object and another object.
Incorrect :- I'm going twice as fast as the normal speed

In C the comparison is between fish and sea food(subject form) and them(object form) hence C is incorrect

Therefore D is correct.

PS:- It was only after knowing OA, that I could make sense out of the sentence..... I worked backwards

if you realize the parallelism of the sentence (cutting and raising) you can eliminate b,c,e

The problem then comes to deciding between A and D. In principle the pronoun they should refer to suppliers, but since is absurd to say that suppliers are growing as fast as suppliers grow naturally, we can assume that they refer to fish.

The main problem with A is the comparison

Consider this example

I run as fast as Michel does. Correct
I run as fast as Michel's speed rate

I think this is an incorrect comparison, since you are compering an action "running" with a noun "rate".
I hope someone can explain this better

Comparison in C is not logical.

To meet the rapidly rising market demand for fish and seafood, suppliers are growing fish twice as fast as growing them naturally, cutting their feed allotment

In nature fish grow by themselves suppliers do not grow them naturally. Therefore C is not logical.

suppliers are growing fish twice as fast as (rate) fish grow naturally.

Suppliers are trying to grow fish at double rate, the rate at which fish grow naturally.

This is a GMATPrep question and OA is D. C is wrong.

clever trick.
I got stuck between C and D, and unfortunately I fell in the trap of grammar!
while over and over it is emphasized that meaning first, grammar second!
in D, it seems that they refers to suppliers, base on parallelism structure. but this is illogical parallelism.
C is the correct answer.

Absolutely agree, but this only corroborates the point that has been made umpteen times before: do not eliminate an answer choice based upon pronoun ambiguity.

To summarize, an ambiguous pronoun (a pronoun with multiple antecedents) is acceptable on GMAT; an orphan pronoun (a pronoun with no antecedent) is not.

D is the OA actually, for the reason cited above that C introduces an illogical meaning.

Where is plural fishes....like wise for their ?? :|

I am hoping your question is of a general academic interest, and not specific to this question, since all the options in this question refer to fish as plural, so whether fish is singular or plural, is a moot point here.

This approach is actually important, because one needs to have an eye for the various differences in the options, to quickly figure out what the SC is testing. Clearly fish being singular or plural is not being tested here.

To meet the rapidly rising market demand for fish and seafood, suppliers are growing fish twice as fast as their natural growth rate, cutting their feed allotment by nearly half and raising them on special diets.

A. their natural growth rate, cutting their feed allotment fish is the object. needs an object pronoun "they"
B. their natural growth rate, their feed allotment cut needs object pronoun "they". Violates parallelism ---> "cutting" and "raising"
C. growing them naturally, cutting their feed allotmentsounds awkward when used with the sentence
D. they grow naturally, cutting their feed allotment Correct. Uses object pronoun "they" and is good in parallelism
E. they grow naturally, with their feed allotment cutViolates parallelism

Perhaps you wanted to say subject pronoun (and not object pronoun).

Also, as noted in my post above, the use of they is at best ambiguous in option D (since, from a parallelism perspective, they seems to be referring to suppliers, while the intent is obviously that they should refer to fish).

Hi EducationAisle

Can u please point out exactly what is wrong in A? I find the usage of "their" and "they" in option A and option D respectively, both ambiguous.
Please help

A says: suppliers are growing fish twice as fast as their natural growth rate

That is incorrect, because in comparisons, rate is fast is not a valid usage.

For example, following is incorrect:

Rate of growth of crop X is faster than rate of growth of crop X.

Following would be correct:

Rate of growth of crop X is twice the rate of growth of crop X.

Not sure what specific rule E is violating but the ", with" just feels way out of -place in the sentence.

suppliers are growing fish twice as fast by doing two things:

i) cutting their feed allotment and
ii) raising them on special diets

So, cutting and raising need to have a similar structure. Since raising is in the non-underlined portion, we need to have cutting in the underlined portion.

anaccident wrote:

growing them naturally is incorrect. No one can grow anyone naturally; the very fact that growth is natural, implies that they grown on their own.

C. growing them naturally, cutting their feed allotment
D. they grow naturally, cutting their feed allotment
E. they grow naturally, with their feed allotment cut

The answer is indeed D. Here are the important takeaways:

1) Here fast is an adverb modifying verb grow. Since fast is a determinant adverb used in comparison, make sure it modifies a verb in the other part of comparison. Here growth rate is not a verb but a noun.
2) Growth rate is a rate which can high or low but cannot be fast or slow.
3) Here growing them naturally doesn't make sense. Natural growth is something in which nobody has to do anything. So you cannot "grow" something naturally. So make sure things make logical sense.
4) Note that both fish and seafood are plural forms. Fishes is often used to denote species of fish.

Im stuck between C and D.
Cant we say suppliers are
growing fish twice as fast as
    growing them(fish)

Subject is suppliers first and then we shift it to fish saying they grow naturally.

Please explain.

Thanks
NNG

The comparison marker "twice as fast as" can be used to compare two clauses (verbs) with different subjects. Here the clauses compared are:
1. Suppliers are growing fish.
2. they grow naturally.

(The verbs "are growing" and "grow" are correctly compared.)

C is wrong because the verb "are growing" is wrongly compared to present participle "growing".
If you consider that the second "growing" is also a verb with its helping verb "are" omitted in the second element of comparison, then the meaning would be problematic - the farmers are growing fishes, yet the same fishes grow naturally: this does not make sense.

Hi mikemcgarry, GMATNinja, GMATNinjaTwo,

Sorry for bumping up this old thread, but I still don't quite understand how I could figure out what the "they" in choice D refers to - suppliers or fish? Also, are there any rules on figuring out the correct pronoun antecedent?
