Re: To those that are troubled, we should raise awareness of [#permalink]

I disagree. To me, this seems like a classic case where meaning trumps parallelism. Let's focus on D and E.

D) Those who are troubled should raise awareness of --> looks the least ugly. "who" is used correctly for people and list makes sense
E) The ones who are troubled should be made aware of --> not parallel with the list marked by "and"

D implies that it's the people who are in trouble who should be raising the awareness of the harmful impact of blah blah blah.
E, for all its inelegance, gives the correct sense that it's the people who are in trouble who should be made aware (passive voice here, so it's unclear who's doing the awareness raising).

E is closer to the original meaning.

But, that said, I question the quality of the question. After all, who uses mollify (basically, to placate), when ameliorate fits much better?

Re: To those that are troubled, we should raise awareness of [#permalink]
Even i though E is better but after rereading like 10 times i feel E is not right in meaning since it loses the original meaning. People who are affected should raise awareness people who are affected should be made aware of. Actually who should beware these people is very unclear in E. hence in the first read it looks like E is better in meaning but when you read it several times you notice E is not.

Thanks

I chose D. I agree with connect the dots. There is no actie subject for "find". Who will "find" ?

Initially picked E but convinced with D after closely reading choice E.

Choice E: The ones who are troubled should be made aware of harmful emissions and their deleterious effect on our cities and citizens and find other ways to mollify the negative consequences of fossil fuel transportation.

Clearly choice E has a passive construction before AND and an active construction after it. Moreover it is not clear who is creating awareness and who must find other ways. Hence E is out.

Choice D: Those who are troubled should raise awareness of harmful emissions and their deleterious effect on our cities and citizens and find other ways to mollify the negative consequences of fossil fuel transportation.

Choice D correctly refers to those who must raise awareness and find other ways. Hence D wins.

option A conveys we should make aware those who are troubled, means troubled are at receiving end, but in correct choice D meaning is changed now its saying troubled should raise awareness now troubled are at giving end.

I think B is better choice as it keeps the original meaning.

IMO D.

A. 'that are troubled' is wrong usage. 'that' as a relative pronoun is not used to refer to people.
B. Wrong construction.
C. 'raised as to' seems odd, but we can come back to it.
D. Construction seems to be fine, but we need to check the meaning.
E. Construction seems to be fine, but we need to check the meaning.

Let's check the meaning of the original sentence. The 'we' in original sentence refers to 'people who are troubled'. So, the sentence means that the people who are troubled are the ones who should raise awareness and blah blah.

C and E are out for wrong meaning.

Only D has the right construction and conveys the right meaning.

A) To those that are troubled, we should raise awareness of
B) Awareness should be raised to help those who are troubled, about
C) The troubles of those who are aware should be raised as to
D) Those who are troubled should raise awareness of
E) The ones who are troubled should be made aware of

I would like to about the quality of this question because the correct does not make any sense logically.

Everything else at bay,we should see the difference between raise awareness of and made aware of in D and E.
D follows the question so D.

+1 if liked it.

Option A conveys we should make aware those who are troubled, means troubled are at receiving end, but in correct choice D, meaning is changed. Now it is saying troubled should raise awareness, means troubled are at giving end.

Which one is correct?

Hi Mahmud6 ,

I agree with your point. But note that we donot have any correct option that is maintaining the original meaning. We cannot simply use that for people. Hence, A is out.

Only option that is correct here is D. Although it is changing the meaning, we need to select this as it is the only correct option.

P.S: This is allowed on GMAT.

Re: To those that are troubled, we should raise awareness of [#permalink]
Let's bring in meaning and logic into this question rather than just grammar.

To those that are troubled, we should raise awareness of harmful emissions and their deleterious effect on our cities and citizens and find other ways to mollify the negative consequences of fossil fuel transportation.

A) To those that are troubled, we should raise awareness of - This option with a really bad grammatical construction means that the people who are troubled by the harmful emissions should be made aware of the 'harmful emissions and their deleterious effect on our cities and citizens'. If you are troubled by something you know what that something is, right? The people that are facing challenges that causes inconvenience in their life because of something don't need to be made aware of the cause rather people who are oblivious to the fact that they have a part to play in the inconvenience caused or are simply oblivious to the fact that other people are suffering because of an action/situation should be made aware of this. INCORRECT.

B) Awareness should be raised to help those who are troubled, about - Even though meaning and logic are more or less on the right track, the grammatical construction and the placement of 'about' are not really nice. Also, this is written in passive voice. But still, let's retain this option. SAVE FOR LATER.

C) The troubles of those who are aware should be raised as to - Again, the meaning is off. The sentence was written with the intent of making people aware of the harmful effect on both cities and citizens. INCORRECT.

D) Those who are troubled should raise awareness of - Meaning is correct and logical. Seems like a good choice. SAVE FOR LATER

E) The ones who are troubled should be made aware of - Same meaning issues as in option A. INCORRECT

Between B and D, B is passive and is not as grammatically sound as option D.

Hence, option D should be the correct answer.

A) To those that are troubled, we should raise awareness of
We should raise awarness against those who trouble or use fossil fuel and not the otherway around

B) Awareness should be raised to help those who are troubled, about
Awarness should be raised against the troublers and not agaignst the persons who trouble therefore out

C) The troubles of those who are aware should be raised as to
if you are aware that in term will not lead to trouble , meaning error therefore out

D) Those who are troubled should raise awareness of
The meaning is better since people who are troubled should raise against those are using the fossil fuel and troubling them therefore out

E) The ones who are troubled should be made aware of
trouble should be the right usage therefore out

Such a trouble this question in the end IMO D
