A. Too many wrong stuffs going on. Double could be associated with a number or a figure but not apples. Also "has" is incorrect. the verb needs to be parallel with the past tense of produced. So "has" doesnt do it. we need "did" This is often tested on the GMAT. An analogy could be:
I scored less than I had in the last exam. NOT CORRECT
I scored less than I did in the last exam. CORRECT
C. as much as cannot denote quantity. "much" denotes items that are not quantifiable.
D. Same problem as A. we need "did" not "were". Also two times as many is wordy.
E. Acreage cannot produce a doubling. It can produce double the number of apples.

B. CORRECT

The only choices that make sense are B and E - look at the final verbe did but in E a doubling is clearly wrong and weird

B wins

On hindsight the answer seems to be B.

The concept to learn here is the difference between Twice and Double

Searched all over the net, but found contradicting answers. Can someone throw some light on the same.

Hi

I think Double is used when some item/thing itself doubled for example:

There were only 11100000 MBA graduates in 1990, double the figure for 2012

So here figure itself double but for the question at hand, the applies did not double (it should have at-least read "double the nos of apples") so twice is preferred!

Makes sense?

No, contrary to much of the discussion here, this is not a question about the use of word "double."

Start with the split among has/did/were, that is, the choice between simple past and present perfect.

Use simple past here, because (1) all the action described by the verb has/did/were took place in 1910, (2) we use present perfect--has/have+past participle--only for an action or event that began in the past and continues (or whose effects continue) into the present. Eliminate A and C.

Use the pro-verb "did" to represent the verb "produced." Eliminate D.

The acreage produces apples ("twice as many apples") not an event ("a doubling of the apples"). Apart from this meaning issue, the GMAT generally prefers nice, concrete noun phrases to vague action nouns. Eliminate E.

That leaves B.

I would be very surprised to see a GMAT question settled by a choice between "double the number" and "twice as many."

regarding ellipsis

"did" can be used if there is a verb in present tense
"do" can stand for a verb in present tense
"have done" can stand for a ver in present perfect.

pls, list the other cases of ellipsis, if you know

are the above cases correct?
