C (3). Those is the correct pronoun restatement for cars.

S-V agreement cars-are. D and E convolute the word order.

4 and 5 somehow shifts the meaning of original sentence. The original sentence mentions an improved charactersitic of small cars, whereas 4 and 5 mention the "more " in quantity.
their in 1 and 2 are ambiguous.
I'm left with C.

C it is...
A can be eliminated because of their..whom does 'their' refer to.. Also now is redundant...
D and E change the meaning of the sentence by introducing 'fuel efficient small cars'..
Between B and C.. B can be eliminated for the same reason as A...
left with C...

"any other" is required to exclude the present.

Hi, I was wondering which one of the following two is better? Are they all grammatically correct at least?

(1) Today's technology allows manufacturers to make small cars that are more fuel-efficient than those at any other time in production history. [same as answer choice (C)]

(2) Today's technology allows manufacturers to make small cars that are more fuel-efficient than they were at any other time in production history. ["than they were" instead of "than those"]

Also, is there any difference between "any other time in production history" and "any time in production history"? Seems the correct answer has "other" for a reason, can someone explain?

Thanks a lot!

Hi,
two reasons why E is wrong..

Today's technology allows manufacturers to make small cars more fuel-efficient now than at any time in their production history.
5) more fuel-efficient small cars now than at any time in

1) more fuel efficient small cars means different from 'small cars that are more fuel efficient'...
the comparison shifts from fuel efficiency to more number of fuel efficient small cars, illogically..

2) now is also a time in the production history..
so at any time should change to at any other time..

hope it helped

Answers A, B and D are out becasue, among other things, the pronoun "their" has not a clear antecedent.
It could refer to Manufacturers or to Small Cars.

So we are left with C and E.
E is wrong because we need to compare today's small cars with small cars from any OTHER time.
If we do not have the word OTHER, we are saying that today's small cars are more fuel-efficient than themselves, which is illogical.

So the correct answer ir C

Option D and E talks about number of fuel efficient cars but the discussion is about making small cars more fuel efficient.
We are left with Options A,B,C

Option A is irrelevant comparison with time.
Option B : they is ambiguous

Hence Option C is answer

Today's technology allows manufacturers to make small cars more fuel-efficient now than at any time in their production history.

A) small cars are more fuel-efficient now than at any time in their
B) small cars that are more fuel-efficient than they were at any time in their
C) small cars that are more fuel-efficient than those at any other time in
D) more fuel-efficient small cars than those at any other time in their
E) more fuel-efficient small cars now than at any time in

A) The "are" is unnecessary, and "at any time" should read "at any other time." Otherwise it is an invalid comparison, since now is also a time. That's like saying "Sachin Tendulkar is better than any cricketer," which of course should read, "Sachin Tendulkar is better than any other cricketer," because he is not better than himself!

B) Again, "at any time" should read "at any other time."

C) Correct. "those" is an elegant way of referencing "small cars," and it also preserves the focus and meaning of the original.

D) We cannot compare a verb to a noun. In other words, we cannot compare how many cars are made to the cars themselves.

E) Sounds pretty good other than the "at any time" vs. "at any other time" issue that we should already be aware of, thanks to answers A/B vs. answers C/D. You could also argue that it shifts the meaning slightly from the original, changing the focus from small cars that are fuel efficient to fuel-efficient cars that are small.

You could also argue that all the answer choices with the word "now" (A and E) are redundant because of the reference to "Today's technology".

When confused by a tough SC, don't forget to compare and contrast your answers for inspiration. Omitting the "other" from this expression is a common mistake, but you can catch this mistake by paying close attention to the small differences in each answer choice.

problem is with the shifting of the meaning, comparison is between cars manufactured now with car manufacturing at other time, it is not between more fuel efficient car vs cars of other time. so it is right to say that- small cars that are more fuel-efficient than those (small cars) at any other time.

in choice A, their pronoun can refer to cars or manufacturer
Choice e - meaning shift, redundant "now", today conveys the same meaning

"Those" is preferred in this case, because a "different copy" of "small cars" is required. We are not referring to the same "small cars that are more fuel efficient", but to a "different copy" of the "small cars", which were produced at any other time in production history. "They" could be used if we were referring the same cars. Another example may make the mistake more visible:

On the bridge I saw cars that are bigger than those in front of the house.... right
On the bridge I saw cars that are bigger than they are in front of the house....... wrong.

Therefore answer B is wrong.

Hi Chetan,

Is the comparison in opn A correct if we change the wording a lil bit?
Say....
Small cars more fuel efficient now than at any other time in the production history?
i am just trying to understand better how comparison works. I think now the comparison is fine Time vs Time (Now vs. at any other time). Can you please give your inputs on this?
