Today’s technology allows manufacturers to make small cars more fuel-efficient now than at any time in their production history.

(A) small cars more fuel-efficient now than at any time in their -> not comparing car's fuel-eff with another
(B) small cars that are more fuel-efficient than they were at any time in their -> Correct!
(C) small cars that are more fuel-efficient than those at any other time in -> same problem as A
(D) more fuel-efficient small cars than those at any other time in their -> changes meaning slightly!
(E) more fuel-efficient small cars now than at any time in -> same as D!

I go with C...coz A, B, D use "their" in the end.....cars' or manufacturer's production history....modifier problem..
C compares small cars being made now with the ones ever made in the history

I will say E is gone 'cos of redundancy....

"with today's technology...now" is redundant in my opinion.

C stands out

Oh my God!! What a confusing question, it took me a long time to sort things out

Yes it should be ^ C ^

"..small cars that are more fuel-efficient than those at any other time in.." is the correct usage.

D/E - change the mening; It means more cars are made which are fuel efficient. While what we are addressing is 'more small cars that are fuel efficient'

Now/ A/B/C
A - incorrect grammar
B - compares it the small cars to itself "they"
C - compares to the small cars in other times

C is right, whats OA.

I too am for C.
But, I am little doubtful on the comparison. If we consider the comparison alone, B seems better. But the pronouns they, their do have proper antecedents.
Lets wait for OA.
