Tom and Mary bought some books and magazines. The price for each book is x dollars and the price for each magazine is y dollars. If Tom spent a total of $50 and Mary spent a total of $100, x=?
(1) They bought a total of 10 books.
(2) The price of for the magazine is $5.
A. Statement (1) ALONE is sufficient but Statement (2) ALONE is not sufficient.
B. Statement (2) ALONE is sufficient but Statement (1) ALONE is not sufficient.
C. BOTH Statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER Statement alone is sufficient.
D. Each Statement ALONE is sufficient.
E. Statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are NOT sufficient.

Let the number of books purchased = a and the magazines purchased = b
Hence you can write the equations ------- ax +by = 50 + 100 = 150

S1. Tells you that a = 10
S2. y = 5

Now we have three equations but four unknowns

agreed
small correction a+b = 10

too many variables and too less equation => not solvable
