Tom reads at an average of 30 pages per hour, while Jan [#permalink] New post 07 Apr 2006, 17:58
Tom reads at an average of 30 pages per hour, while Jan reads at an average of 40 pages per hour. If Tom starts reading a novel at 4.30 pm and Jan starts reading an identical copy of the same book at 5.20 pm, at what time will they be reading the same page?

Explainations most welcome

Thanks

Tom reads at a rate of 30 pages/60 minutes.... or 1page/2minutes

Tom started reading the book 50 minutes before Jan, therefore have read 50*1/2=25 pages already....

Jan has to close on Tom by 25 pages....

You may notice that Jan reads 10 pages/60 minutes faster than Tom.....

Therefore it will take Jan 2.5h to catch up with Tom...

The answer would be 7:50 pm......
