Tom reads at an average rate of 30 pages per hour, while Jan reads at an average rate of 40 pages per hour. If Tom starts reading a novel at 4:30 and Jan begins reading an identical novel at 5:20, at what time will they be reading the same page:

A 9:30
B 9:00
C 8:40
D 7:50
E 7:00

Here is what I did:

Average rate = 1/2 page per minute

40 minutes Tom reads 20 pages (difference between 5:20 and 4:30)

20 + 1/2 x = 2/3x where x is the number of minutes

x = 120.
I get 7:20 to be the answer..

Anyone getting a different one??

TOTAL PAGES READ BY TOM = 30(T+50)

TOTAL PAGES READ BY JAN = 40 T

30(T+50) = 40T THUS T = 2.5 HOURS

5:20 HOURS + 2:30 HOURS = 7:50

MY ANSWER IS D

ahh.. drat.. I calculated the difference to be 40 instead of 50..

:saw

It should be
25 + 1/2 x = 2/3x where x is the number of minutes

Thanks Yezz...
