Tom reads at an average rate of 30 pages per hour, while Jan reads at an average rate of 40 pages per hour. If Tom starts reading a novel at 4:30, and Jan begins reading an identical copy of the same book at 5:20, at what time will they be reading the same page?

Sorry, I have to leave now but I'll give you the working when I'll get home in about 2 hours. Unless you get it from someone else before I give it out... :(

D

make the grid and solve.

T 30/hr = 1/2 page per min
5:30 would have finished = 30
7:30 would have finished = 60
8:30 would have finished = 90

J 40/hr = 4/6 per min
6:20 would have finished = 40
7:20 would have finished = 80
8:20 would have finished = 120

T at 7:50 = 90+1/2*20 = 100 ----- 20 mins after 7:30
J at 7:50 = 80 + 4/6*30 = 100 ----- 30 mins after 7:20

Another way to think about it:

Think of this as a distance problem in drag: D=R*T

Distance for the slow dude: 30 mph or ppm

Distance for the faster chick 40 mph or ppm

Tom has a 50 min jump on the faster chick thus T+5/6 for the dude and T for Jan.

Make the distances equal.

30(T+5/6)=40T

Solve for T: T=2.5

Add 2.5 to 5:20 (when Jan starts) = 7:50 and D is your answer!

Hope this helps dude.
