Too late to apply? [#permalink] New post 16 Jan 2011, 14:14
Hi all.
I am new to the forum and had a question regarding MSc Finance applications. I have recently decided to apply for this program in various European business schools as well as at Columbia. Deadlines for most are end March/ 1st April. Given that I have not yet taken the GMAT and am only starting applications, do you think it is too late to make a start on this now? Will this put me at a disadvantage?

The concerns I have are regarding the studying for the GMAT, which I was hoping to take in late Feb/ early Mar, and the application essays, which judging from discussions re MBA applications, make up a big chunk of what they use to make their decisions. I am afraid that my application would appear as being somewhat rushed, and believe that given more time, I would be able to perfect it more.

Also, does applying so close to the deadline reduce my chances of getting in?

Any thoughts/ comments are appreciated. Thanks in advance!

First, I think most people here are only familiar with applying to MBA programs (myself included). But given the information you provided, I think applying this year for your masters in finance is feasible with a lot of planning, organization, and hard work. If you're working full time, expect to have no social life. I would try to schedule your GMAT so that you can retake it in case the score is not as high as you would like (late Feb since you can only take it every 30 days). Focus most of your time until then on the GMAT, but I would definitely start looking at the essay questions and thinking of examples from your life to write about on the side.

Submitting your application on the day is due will not reduce your chances of acceptance.

In the end, I think it's up to you. If you're really determined and focused on starting school this fall, go for it 100%. But if you feel like you want more time to do the applications and think about if getting this degree is right for you, wait until next year. But IMO, I think you can definitely do the apps this year if you wanted. Good luck!
