Too late to start new community service? [#permalink]

So...I have the opportunity to get on my city's zoning board or building code board. I am interested in doing this and have dealt with this stuff a lot in the last few years. Personally I find this stuff rather interesting and would like to be a part of the process but its a 5 year appointment and I am only going to be able serve a year or so before I have to leave for school. If I wasn't going to school I would do it in a heart beat but I dont like the idea of making a commitment and then resigning a year later. Its my personal feelings that if I commit to something I should follow through. Since I know I will be leaving I feel it would be in poor taste to do that. However, if this will strengthen my application I would definitely do it and thats about the only reason I would accept it knowing I am going to leave. I am worried that since this is only 6 months before I submit my applications its going to look like I did it just for that reason.
So should I do it? Opinions welcome.
