served is the main verb ...exhorting and travelling are subordinate verbs here. hence the participle format.

hence the participle format. Isn' t [highlight]exhorted[/highlight] in A is a [highlight]subordinate verb[/highlight] and in [highlight]past participle[/highlight], suiting the sentence more as it happened in past than a [highlight]present participle[/highlight] as in E?

For me after a comma AND is not the best choice (if not wrong) , so B and C are out D has travelling and THEN exorted E has travelling and THEN exorting, may be correct but the first verb of the phrase is a past tense (served) and the whole sentence is a situation during the past. totally gone hence A for me. For sure the struggle is between A and E

The selection of a past or present participle in a given case will depend upon the context and the word involved, IMO. Certain verbs can not be used as past participle. For examples, ‘differed’ is a past participle form, but can u use it as a past participle? ‘Differed from’ or ‘differed by’ are not correct forms, in such cases, we are forced to use differing from and differing by. Similarly, traveled does not fit in effectively as past participle. ‘Douglas served, traveled to North” is inelegant in the least. Secondly what will the infinitive ‘to exert’ modify now, traveled or served? There are a few more verbs that I can remember as being suitable for present participle than for past participle. For example Dive/ Dived / Dived Dare/ dared/ dared Have. Had /had Shine/ shone/ shone Stink/ stunk/ stunk

during this day I thought a lot to this SC and I resisted to search on the web and so on..... To a closer look A is NOT the answer. because if we use "traveled" we should not refer to is work as a recruting agent but it seems a different things; insteda "travelling" make a continum........E is the best choice.
