Too old to bear arms himself, Frederick Douglass served as a recruiting agent, traveled through the North to exhort Black men to join the Union army.

(A) traveled through the North to exhort
(B) and he traveled through the North and exhorted
(C) and traveling through the North exhorted
(D) traveling through the North and exhorted
(E) traveling through the North and exhorting

Need a modifier, he was traveling while recruiting. Eliminate A/B/C.
Between D and E, parallelism -> choose D.

I go with C.
D > Travelling thru AND exorted makes it a parallel structure. But then travelling and exorted are not in the same tense.

C makes more sense to me as traveling is an action which is 'simultaneously' done while he exorted.

Agree with E

If "served" and "exhorted" are parallel, the comma should follow "the North", so D out

I selected A for the demand of "Past Participle" in the sentence (and selected A) rather than a "Present Participle" (and selecting E).

Can anyone tell how to determine when to use Past Participle and when to use Present Participle?
