Tooten County is populated by a significantly lower [#permalink] New post 09 Aug 2012, 20:38

Question Stats:

80% (02:08) correct 19% (00:54) wrong based on 42 sessions
Tooten County is populated by a significantly lower percentage of young families than the typical county in the nation. Yet, per capita retail sales of children's bicycles are above the national average.

Which of the following, if true, best reconciles the seeming paradox described above?

A.The two leading retailers of children's bicycles in Tooten County spend a remarkable 50% of their marketing budget on attracting residents of neighboring counties.
B.A local manufacturer of children's bicycles has just announced that national sales are up 20% over last year.
C.Retail outlets in Tooten County import the majority of their children's bicycles from Canada.
D.Elementary schools in Tooten County continue to promote the values of exercise to its students.
E.Residents of Tooten County rent children's bicycles as about the same rate as residents of other counties in the nation.

Initially, while reading the option,at first,I marked off all the options as wrong. I was going nowhere, then I took risk and marked option D but I was sure that it is wrong as I was assuming that for execrisie, bicycle is not the only solution. Good question...after seeing OA, I was cursing myself on missing some critical information... :-(

dont agree with the OA. I chose E.

Option A says that the leading b.companies spend half of their MARKETING budgets on attracking new customers from neigbouring countries. but it doesnt necessarily mean that this policy will lead per capita retail SALES to be the national average.

A.The two leading retailers of children's bicycles in Tooten County spend a remarkable 50% of their marketing budget on attracting residents of neighboring counties.
leading retailers may or may not have the largest market share to influence the sales. Also, the marketing campaign doesn't guarantee the sales.
B.A local manufacturer of children's bicycles has just announced that national sales are up 20% over last year.
this could be an additional premise.
C.Retail outlets in Tooten County import the majority of their children's bicycles from Canada.
this can be correct because the cost of one bicycle may cost more than the actual cost + the import taxes, increasing the per capita expense on bicycle sales.
D.Elementary schools in Tooten County continue to promote the values of exercise to its students.
exercising is related to cycling but the sales of new cycle is no where mentioned, they may have a gym where the cycles are available for the use for all students.
E.Residents of Tooten County rent children's bicycles as about the same rate as residents of other counties in the nation.
doesn't matter , even if it does ,then it doesn't affect the per capita sales .because rent would be anyhow much lesser than the cost of the cycle.

the OA is not satisfactory.I chose (C) as my answer

Well, I dont agree with this part of ur text, since if it is said that these companies are LEADING, it definitely means that they control the market.

Agree! that is why I also think that OA cant be A

C is out of scope, since we do not know how these retail outlets influence on the per capita sales as a whole.
I have read ur post about E, and agree with you. hmm, strange question...canr find a real solution

Why A is not a satisfactory answer choice ;

Consider the City with 10 retailers with turnover by volume sales (in crores / year)

CASE A:-2,3,1.5,6,8,9,34,89,94
CASE B:-1,2,5,4.2,8,7.5,2.7,3,1,1.2

in CASE A,the last two retailers have the largest market share by volume and turnover, so they can bring change by marketing campaigns(if successful) but even if we consider so, then also the marketing campaigns doesn't guarantee the sales success.

in CASE B, the influence is not at all possible because none of the two retailers have a larger impact overall.

Let's talk about (C)

Cost of a bicycle is $100, per unit. Now the people of the city are importing the same cycle from Canada , definitely there would be taxes involved in the import(default ; import costs )and the price becomes $150 , so the people are paying $50 in excess for the same cycle per unit bicycle purchased.
So, for the same no. of units sold costs more (total revenue) in the city, hence increases the per capita retail sales.

We have to resolve paradox that inspite of less young families [and hence less no of children in the county] why the sales of children bicycles are high. Looking from another perspective we have to strengthen the argument that "sales of bicyles are high inspite of less no of children in the county". Following is my analysis on the given options.

A.The two leading retailers of children's bicycles in Tooten County spend a remarkable 50% of their marketing budget on attracting residents of neighboring counties. strengthens the argument.

B.A local manufacturer of children's bicycles has just announced that national sales are up 20% over last year. How does it impact, dont know, hence it neither strenthens or weakens the argument

C.Retail outlets in Tooten County import the majority of their children's bicycles from Canada. How does it impact, dont know, hence it neither strenthens or weakens the argument

D.Elementary schools in Tooten County continue to promote the values of exercise to its students. Does exercise map to Bicycle one to one? Dont know, hence hence it neither strenthens or weakens the argument

E.Residents of Tooten County rent children's bicycles as about the same rate as residents of other counties in the nation. Argument talks about sales of bicycles and not rental. So not applicable

So the best option is A. If the retailers are advertising and selling the bicycles to other counties, it could drive the sales of bicycles.

hm, C only states that retail outlets (note, not all retailers) in Tooten County import the majority of their children's bicycles from Canada. lets assume that they are 100 retailers, 5 of them are retail outlets. And the business of these retail outlets mostly relies on import of canadian bicycles.

imho C is a wrong answer

bhavinshah5685 , could you please post the OE? just curious

Here is the OE

The question requires finding the one answer that explains how a community with fewer young families can still sell more children's bicycles than the average. The discrepancy can be explained by recognizing that retail sales can often include purchases by residents of other areas. Answer (A) adds the information that retailers of children's bicycles in Tooten County make an unusually strong effort to attract customers from other counties. Thus, (A) is the correct answer.

Answer (B) refers to the sales of a manufacturer, not a retailer.

Answer (C) is equally irrelevant as it refers to imports and not sales.

Answer (D) might seem tempting as it might help explain why the children of Tooten County would be encouraged to ride bicycles, but it does not offer any evidence that this practice is unique to that county.

As answer (E) refers to rentals, it is of no relevance to the question

the effort made to attract customers is not equal to the sales of the products-irrelevant

Answer (C) is equally irrelevant as it refers to imports and not sales.

Answer (D) might seem tempting as it might help explain why the children of Tooten County would be encouraged to ride bicycles, but it does not offer any evidence that this practice is unique to that county.

i selected between A and D then chose A as D has a higher leap than A . . if A then marketing efforts should result in sales if D then promoting exercise should promote using bicycle
