Top 4 Mistakes Made with the Harvard Application 2015-2016Given Harvard’s sole MBA application essay, unlimited essay length, ample space on the application form, challenging application form questions, resume requirement and succinct recommendation form questions, candidates should employ a solid strategy to present their best achievements and a compelling case for admission. Many applicants fail to strategize excellently and based on the candidates we have conducted Ding Analyses for thus far, here are the four most common mistakes that were made with the Harvard application this 2015-2016 admission cycle:
Mistake #1: Failing to take great advantage of the sole essay in the HBS application. When there is only one essay topic in an MBA application, it is extremely important that you do an outstanding job in writing it, choosing the topic with great care. You should ensure it highlights your winning strengths and credentials and uses excellent business-relevant language to convey some of the key points. You should make certain to use this “prime real estate” to present a very strong, compelling portrait of yourself, including your passions, skills, talents, greatest achievements, personal story and vision for the future. You need to identify which of your many experiences, credentials and skills are your greatest assets and showcase those. Make sure to review the HBS video, as it provides many ideas about what sort of student HBS is seeking. Your job is to sell the admissions committee through this sole essay on the idea that you will be a unique and valuable addition to their MBA class.
Mistake #2: Failing to demonstrate leadership and innovation/ thought leadership. It is very important that candidates demonstrate ample leadership – ideally both in their extracurricular activities and in the workplace – and a strong inclination toward embracing new ideas and fostering innovation. These are key for your candidacy. But you should showcase evidence of your leadership and thought leadership throughout the application – in the essay, recommendations, resume and application form. If you are currently lacking in credentials in these areas, you should address these areas in the months you have before submitting a re-application. Many candidates with the top academic credentials – 3.8 GPAs, 770 GMAT scores – can find themselves rejected from HBS if the school does not believe they see a future leader in them.
Mistake #3: Failing to maximize use of the application form. HBS, unlike many other top business schools, provides a very extensive application form that takes time and effort to complete. Many candidates make the mistake of beginning to fill that form out right before the deadline and rush the process, failing to present their best credentials on the form. Given the importance of the questions asked on the form – such as your greatest challenge at work, your greatest achievement at work and why you left each job – failing to address these topics excellently can put you in a less-than-ideal spot with regard to admissions. Similarly, you need to give great thought to the extracurricular activities and awards you list on the form. The form, with its great detail, provides a very important overview of the strength of your candidacy and can be used as a major weeding-out tool as the admissions committee decides whether or not to consider your candidacy seriously based on the impression they have received from that application form. Make sure that you devote ample time to working on the HBS application form and strategize well!
Mistake #4: Failing to present stellar recommendations. Among the mistakes made with the recommendations are these. Some recommendation writers imply that a candidate is very good, but not outstanding. This is HBS – they want outstanding! This needs to be communicated in the text as well as through how the recommendation writer marks the “grid” on the application form, where they rate you in key categories such as leadership and analytical skills. Similarly, Harvard desires candidates that have demonstrated a high level of leadership and innovation. Your recommendations should ideally reflect that you have these qualities.
If you are interested in re-applying to Harvard, try to assess if you made any of these frequent mistakes and, if so, correct them in order to put forward an outstanding application.
