Explanation

We’ll go for LOGICAL because we can correct the illogical and inaccurate comparison.

The original sentence compares Amrbose Bierce to Mark Twain's fame instead of to Twain himself. We should look for an answer that either compares Bierce's fame to Twain's fame or Bierce himself to Twain himself. The only answer choice that does so is (D).


We’ll go for ALTERNATIVE because it would be easier to use the answer options.

Since the entire sentence is underlined, it would be simpler to compare the answers to one another than figure out how it should be corrected. (A) uses an incorrect idiom—as X than rather than as X as. (B) can be eliminated for the same reason. The opening modifier in (C) creates an illogical comparison between Twain’s success and Bierce's writing. (E) makes a different illogical comparison—between the popularity of Bierce's writing and Twain himself. The answer must therefore be (D), and we can verify that it makes a clear and concise logical comparison between Twain's fame and Bierce's fame.

It should be “as popular as, if not more popular than, his friend”. Moreover, not Ambrose himself but his fame is surpassed by the fame of Mark.

B. Despite the fact of Ambrose Bierce being as popular, if not more popular, in his time than his friend and contemporary Mark Twain, nowadays he is largely surpassed by the fame of the latter.

It should be “as popular as, if not more popular than, his friend”. Moreover, not Ambrose himself but his fame is surpassed by the fame of Mark.

C. Nowadays largely surpassed by the fame of his friend and contemporary Mark Twain, Ambrose Bierce's writing was as popular in his own time as the former's was, if not more so.

It’s illogical to say that Bierce's writing itself is surpassed by the FAME of his friend. q

D. Although nowadays, Ambrose Bierce's fame is largely surpassed by that of his friend and contemporary Mark Twain, in his own time, he was as popular as the latter, if not more so.

Correct choice, “that” correctly refers to “fame”. “as popular as” is appropriately used. Parallel things are compared.

E. Ambrose Bierce's writing was as popular in his time as his friend and contemporary Mark Twain, if not more so, but nowadays his fame is largely surpassed by that of the latter.

Comparing writing with a person is illogical.

I understand that the correct answer is D.
can someone please explain the usage of 'although' in option D. 'Although' should followed by the clause or although+adjective+noun. I am not able to understand usage of what Although follows here

I understand that D is correct from meaning perspective, but doesn't it have the pronoun reference error?. "He" refers to a processive pronoun "Ambrose Bierce's" that was incorrect as I recall per GMATNinja?

Can experts please confirm? Thanks so much!
