B & D are out for using "only armed", it should be "armed only"
I'm stuck between 'A' & 'C'
Would have clicked on 'C'.

prash_c,
Please underline your sentences correctly.
C is the only one that works here, all other choices contain modifier problems.

TeHCM,
I'm somehow not able to eliminate 'A' completely. Please help.
Why 'C'?
In 'C', "traveling the back roads of Hungary armed only" doesn't it sound like "Hungary is armed"?
I know I'm wrong but not able to convince myself

vivek123,
alllow me ....
A is using a cordinating conjuction "and" so for Cordinating conjuction both the clause on side of "and" should be independent. but in A the first part
"Traveling the back roads of Hungary, in 1905 Bela Bartok and Zoltan Kodaly began their pioneering work in ethnomusicology" is not evan a clause. These are just to two phrase one modifying the noun in another..
let me know if you find any flaw in this reasoning

ViveK, may I compliment at how cute your son/daughter is?
Cool Jonny is right.
(A) Traveling the back roads of Hungary, in 1905 Bela Bartok and Zoltan Kodaly began their pioneering work in ethnomusicology, and they were armed only
In addition to the fact that A just sounds plain awkward (no subjects but alot of subordinate clauses)
Traveling the back roads of Hungary has to modify Bartok and Kodaly, but in 1905 is modified instead???
I envision the correct sentence to be something like this...(Other than the one given here of course )
"Traveling the back roads of Hungary, Bartok and Kodaly began their pioneering work in ethnomusicology in 1905 and they were armed only with...."

i would have went with A but I would have got it wrong [#permalink]
05 Jan 2006, 06:54
my initial reaction was A
I guess after Travelling.........., in 1905 is wrong??? because travelling is modifying in 1905?

B is also out because travelling, ... , 1905.... isn't a correct modifier
and samething for D, having traveled is modifying 1905
correct me if i am wrong

I'll go with D. Worried about "having traveled" structure, though.

B is the best option for me [#permalink]
05 Jan 2006, 21:48
I dont think option C is correct becos armed only seems to suggest that they were travelling the back road armed only with .... but the sentence means that they started their study armed only with .....
So keeping what the sentence is implying, I think option B is the best bet.

there is a book called "grammar smart" from princeton review. I used it and it really helped. it's a short book, you can finished in like 5 days but go through it in details.
