Yes the answer is (C).

Can anyone please explain why (C) is correct and others are wrong?

A) It is not clear whether 'they' refers to Bela Bartok and Zoltan Kodaly or the back roads of Hungary
B) same problem as with A; it is not clear whether 'they' refers to Bela Bartok and Zoltan Kodaly or the back roads of Hungary
C) succinct and clear. The removal of 'they' makes it clear that it is Bela Bartok and Zoltan Kodaly that were armed
D) The use of 'having traveled' implies that the travelling is not finished yet and is still ongoing. It changes the meaning of the sentence
E) If someone can help me on this one. I'm not sure as to how to explain why this one is wrong but it is in my mind. A partial explanation is that 'in 1905' is misplaced. 1905 should set the context by being at the beginning of the sentence or should be used as a modifier set between commas which is not the case in E.

E is wrong. 'cos of "arming". Present continuous is used to show actions of continuous nature...for eg, traveling is continuous....armed with would be appropriate to express the fact that they had equipments with them..it waslike they were having instruments with them..

i think...

BTW, the agreed choice C is incorrect, for "armed" can modify Hungary. There should be "and" before "armed" in C.

I agree. This was the reason I skipped C.
