I am going with C.

As he was trying to find a discrepancy in the records, he found that the files had been tampered with.

- IMO, "As" + Sub + was + Verb(ing)............, Sub + Verb (ed) is correct structure.
- Past perfect "had been" is properly used to indicate that something was happened before he found the discrepancy.

B) Trying to find a discrepancy in the records, he

======> He is not finding the discrepancy but reason for discrepancy.

C) As he was trying to find a discrepancy in the records, he

======> Same as B.

D) Having tried to find the reason for a discrepancy in the records, he had

======> Wordy and wrong tense "had". It means first he found then he tried. Funny...


E) Since he is trying to find the reason for a discrepancy in the records, he

======> Wordy and wrong tense "is". It means first he found then he tried. Funny...

No one purposely looks for a discrepency, so B changes the meaning.

Late but A.
GMATT is spot on as to why B is wrong.
C is wrong for the same reason as B .
D and E are plain bad.

YEA....a bit late..but A is the only option which preserved the meanin of the original, at the same time is grammatically right..

The reason of the discrepancy is because the files had been tampered with

B,C --> changes the meaning of the sentence
D,E --> awkward phrasing by wrong choice of tenses

A is the best.
