Miguel is mixing up a salad dressing. Regardless of the number of servings, the recipe requires that 5/8 of the finished dressing mix be olive oil, 1/4 vinegar, and the remainder an even mixture of salt, pepper and sugar. If Miguel accidentally doubles the vinegar and forgets the sugar altogether, what proportion of the botched dressing will be olive oil? 1. 15/29 2. 5/8 3. 5/16 4. 1/2 5. 13/27
OA to come

If Miguel accidentally doubles the vinegar and forgets the sugar altogether, what proportion of the botched dressing will be olive oil? Ratio of each spices = (1- 5/8 - 1/4)/3 = 1/24Actual mixture Oil - 5/8 vinegar - 1/4 *2 Spices = 2/24 total = 5/8 + 1/2 + 2/24 =15/24 + 12/24 + 2/24 = 29 parts in the mixture now of this mixture we have 15 parts of olive so 15/29 My answer is A.

OA to come Lets see Original mix Olive Mix 5/8 Vinegar 2/8 Sugar pepper 1/8 Miguel Mix Olive Mix 2/4 Vinegar 2/4 Sugar pepper 0 2/4 = 1/2 4 is correct I think we need to Ignore Only sugar and not salt and pepper. Initial Olive = 5/8,Vinegar = 1/4 = 2/8 and Even mix of Salt, Pepper and sugar so we get ratio for each of them to be 1/24. Now Miguel mixes Olive 5/8, Vinegar = 4/8 Salt 1/24 Pepper 1/24 Adding them we get Olive ratio as 15/29.hence A

Agree with [A]. Assume 1 unit each of salt, pepper, sugar. Then original salad has 15 units olive oil, 6 units vinegar and 1 units each of salt, pepper, sugar for a total of 24 units. Double the vinegar and remove the sugar you get 15 units of olive oil / (15 + 12 + 1 + 1) = 15/29.
hogann, i noticed you posted a couple other decent questions .. where did you get these questions from if you dont mind sharing the source. Thanks.

The answer is 15/29
If the original content of the dressing was :
Olive oil : 5x/8 Vinegar : x/4 Sugar : x/24 Salt : x/24 Pepper : x/24
Now new contents :
Olive oil is same : 5x/8 Vinegar is doubled : x/2 Sugar is removed Salt is same : x/24 Pepper is same : x/24
( 5x/8 + x/2 + x/24 + x/24 ) = 29x/24
portion of olive oil is 5x/8
5x/8 * 24/29x = 15/29

These questions are from the 700-800 level CAT's from Manhattan GMAT. They definitely push the outer limits in things we should know. Great practice though. I will try to post some more tomorrow.

let the total quantity be a multiple of 8 and 4 = 64 thus original quantities are 40, 16 and 2.6 each for sugar,salt and pepper. new quantities are 40,32,0,2.6 and 2.6 where sugar = 0 thus new total is 77.2 thus % = 40/77.2 < 1/2 closest approximation is 15/29 < 1/2 Hence A.

Let x be the original mix. New mix is as follows 5x/8 - olive 2x/4 - vinegar x/24 - Sugar x/24 - pepper =29x/24 Pepper proportion of new mix = (5/8)*(24/29) = 15/29 Answer is A Posted from my mobile device
