(D) because their bodies burn calories too slowly than because they eat too much
(E) because of their bodies burning calories too slowly than because of their eating too much

please explain

I think this is D.

"due to" means "caused by".
We should use "due to" only if it can be substituted with "caused by"
Its not same as "because of."

So A and B are out.

C lacks ||ism.
Out of D and E, D is better choice because of (not due to :-D ) active voice.

Agree with D.
As ps_dahiya mentioned we need 'because of' rather than 'due to'.
Also in C, 'than that they' is awkward construction.

Its either A or D..

A cannot be the choice as the "studies indicate" which cannot be a fact therefore "due to the fact" is not correct.

The members of a comparison (more X than Y) should be expressed in || form. D, the best choice, correctly uses || clauses introduced by "because".
"Due to" is synonymous with "attributable to" and is unidiomatic to mean "because"

Because simply uses far fewer words than due to the fact.
