UIC MSA vs Depaul MSA [#permalink] New post 07 Mar 2013, 10:08

I am planning on applying to these two schools, UIC and Depaul MSA, and now I am researching about the schools to see which one is better in case I get accepted by both schools.

However, I cannot conclude which school is better just by looking up information through the internet.

I heard from somebody that Depaul is better school in terms of reputation, but I have a couple of reasons to choose UIC over Depaul.

Since I am considered a resident of Illinois, the tuition is cheaper at UIC than Depaul. ( I am not sure how much cheaper UIC would be though)

Also, I am originally from South Korea, so I will go back to Korea after working a couple of years in Chicago.

But having a UIC degree might be better than Depaul degree when I find a job in Korea.

So, what I am concerned the most at this point is that whether chances of getting a job are significantly lower at UIC compared to Depaul.

Thank you for your answer in advance.

If you're planning to go back to Korea no matter what, I would say UIC.

1) UIC will be significantly less expensive than DePaul. Maybe half the cost or less possibly.
2) While DePaul is a good school, it does not have better name recognition outside Chicago/IL and certainly no one outside the US has probably heard of it.
3) In terms of education, the curriculums are probably similar, accounting is accounting. DePaul has nicer facilities and is in the Loop (downtown Chicago) proper, and that's partially why it's more expensive.
4) The recruiting opportunities will be basically the same, slightly better maybe at DePaul. Again, I'm not sure if this matters to you or not if you're planning to eventually leave the country. To get the most out of your connections at DePaul long-term you would need to stay in the Chicago area. If you're trying to get into a Big 4 Chicago office and then transfer to Korea...maybe a slight advantage to DePaul? Not entirely sure though.
5) Both schools are very diverse which you might find helpful.

I guess the point I'm trying to make is if money is no object, choose DePaul. But otherwise, the benefits of going to DePaul are so small when compared to the huge difference in cost.

Hope that helps.
