UNCC Or HKU Or Babson. Pls suggest. [#permalink]
18 Mar 2013, 22:12
Dear All, I have offer from the below mentioned school: 1. UNCC (Belk College of Business) 17-24 months. 2. HKU- 14 months 3. Babson. 24 months
I am confused and need some real help. Babson I have almost dropped out of my option because I feel its costly compared to UNCC (Belk college) and also its a two year course. UNCC (Belk College of Business) has low fees however, its career service is not that great and its more focussed on part-time MBA.
About HKU, its highly ranked in ft (31st), however I sometimes hear not so-great things about it. Its costly and would cost around 45 Lac INR including everything. Good thing is its one-year and has a LBS track.
I had a chance to discuss with the current students of Uncc and Babson,(didn't get a chance to talk to HKU alumni), I pretty much get the same answer regarding the job prospects ---- " it depends on one-self -- networking, reaching out to hiring managers, attending job fairs etc... " Yes the career service do help in giving out the links and resources.
Another point of concern is the H1B in US post MBA, which is really tough. On the other hand HKU will not have such tough Visa rules I believe (Pls feel free elaborate as I am not aware of the visa rules in Hong Kong post MBA, but just read that it should not be that tough compared to US)
Please post your insights and suggestions.
Regards,

Well.... UNCC Belk is not even ranked in US News... so yes, it would quite cheap. The average salaries are not even reported, so that tells me, they are half of what Babson degree would entail. I think I just helped you rule one out. As to Babson vs HKU - that's a huge difference. It really depends on where you want to stay/work (Asia vs. US). Unless you are getting an MBA to escape from some sticky situation (which is the wrong reason to do it) you should have noticed it right away... P.S. H1B is not hard to get but it is a consideration when you get a job (it is harder for an H1B person to get a job)

Regards, Normally you will be granted another year to study in HK after completing the course. In this one year time, if you have a employer to sponsor you work visa, you will than be switching to an employee status. Depending on what industry and backgorund, I think Hong Kong is a place still have loads of opportunities. Of course, getting to know a bit of Chinese would always be a plus.

I think it is a very hard to get visa if you consider that in the most recent "round" it went in a couple of days straight to lottery which means 1. If you managed to find a job / sponsorship for this round, it's now completely down to chance or 2. If you didn't receive sponsorship you have to wait a full 12 months for your next chance - and could very well face a lottery situation again. The visa process is a huge downside of a US MBA.

Thanks for commenting on the visa. I think my info is dated. Good to see economy picking up..... though the H1B limitation is annoying and it seems the changes they have been making it to the process have only been negatives....
