Under Grad GPA is Awful [#permalink] New post 06 May 2006, 16:47
Hi -

I am planning to apply for fall 07 admission to a Real Estate MBA program. I would like to go to a top school but my GPA from undergrad is a 2.55. My senior year I closed out with a 3.0 - however when you look at the entire picture it isnt pretty.

Outside of that I have a 640 GMAT right now, studying for the retest and shooting for a 700, and I have fantastic work experience - 26 years old, been in management for over 3 years etc. 4+years of experience.

How do you suggest I overcome this black mark on my application - and is it possible to overcome it at the elites?

I Guess its just the GMAT and probably take some courses in the evening at a local community college and do well. In effect you have to show that u have the ability to do well in academics. The above would give you some examples to prove that in ur essays or interview!

Yeah I am probably going to take a class over the summer - how many classes do you think I will need in order to prove I can cut it?

Also - any recommendations on class type? Should I do business or just anything I can do well in?

Well not many. Try to take classes focussed on Math - Calculus, Statistics or MicroEconomics.

The idea is to do well. Do not take too many and end up getting average grades.

OasisNYK,

I have seen people (not many) get into elite (Top 5) schools with low GPAs by (a) nailing the GMAT (aiming higher than 700), (b) creating an alternative transcript at a school at least as rigorous as their undergrad institution (statistics and accounting are starting points), and (c) having strong work experience and a powerful personal story (that perhaps partly explains the weak GPA). It can be done, but you should aim lower than the elites if you can.

Good luck,
