I think it depends on how you're articulating your reasoning for "why now" in your essays. I think in your essays, you need to present a more fleshed out reason than riding out the economy (even if it's the sole reason). Is there anyone who doesn't know your core reason for looking at school, maybe they could read your essays and see what they think your reasoning for going back to school is?

Hey Everyone.........

My name is gurpreet and I am a resident of India, I have a few queries....
this is regarding the unemployement issue.... I was working with a S/W firm and lost the job
after 2.5 year of serving the firm...........

After that I was again searching for the job and was able to get one after a gap of 5 months, but on a contract basis... but those 5 months i did lot of social service..... to be productive atleast in the time of recession......

Now I have following questions....
1) does it matter if u jumo from a permanent to a contract base position
2) Is 3 yrs of experience sufficent to get into top15-20 colleges in US
3) Does social service and extra curricular helps to make ur profile stronger

1) does it matter if u jumo from a permanent to a contract base position - No, all that matters is how you explain it
2) Is 3 yrs of experience sufficent to get into top15-20 colleges in US - Yes, some schools also trend younger, I would look into those schools also, but 3 years is sufficient.
3) Does social service and extra curricular helps to make ur profile stronger - Yes of course - I think your involvement in social service during those 5 months says a lot about you, schools will like that you took that path.
