Unexpectedly Laid Off [#permalink]

If I have already submitted my applications but was unexpectedly laid off due to downsizing, what should I do?

Sorry to hear you got laid off. Other than hoping that you get into the schools, I'd say that there isn't much you can do until you interview. When you get to the interview, make sure you discuss things you've been doing since you were laid-off so that it's evident that you haven't been just "sitting around". Also, make sure that you're open and honest about why you were laid off -- this can often be easily attributed to environmental factors which is completely understandable.

do i need to notify the schools that i got laid off? for two of the schools, i've already had my interviews and submitted my applications, do i still need to tell them?

i am just afraid that they'll go to verify the information and see that i got laid off after i submitted. will that count against me in any way?

My advice would be to not tell the schools. Be honest about it, but don't go out of your way to announce it to them. Just as they don't want to be inundated with updates of promotions, job successes, etc., by applicants, they also don't want to get tons of calls and letters with bad news. Let them just evaluate the app that you've sent in, and if they have any questions, they'll probably contact you.
