I think there is a typo---Romance languages should be Roman Languages

Portuguese is a language so how can it take personal pronouns such as Their or its [its--Portugal (nation) ,their-- Portuguese people]
there are instances when we say--English was first spoken in medieval England but today It's spoken as a first language in several countries

but saying (as in B) evidence of its strong mercantile heritage. language having a mercantile heritage ?? doesn't make sense.
heritage can be used with People and nations (which is not the case here)
E correctly repeats Portuguese --to indicate the heritage of Portuguese people

Hope this helps

I agree with most of the points raised by dentobizz regarding that it should be refered to the nation rather than language but disagree that we cannot use the term heritage when we talking about language. I believe the issue here is more not "heritage" but "mercantile heritage". If we say: "Portuguese (language) has rich heritage", we mean that it is the language with rich history, but it is difficult to apply "mercantile heritage" to language because this term means more the "history with materialistic values", which is not very proper for language as it is for nation.

I hope my thinking is correct.

Hi Ziko,

Your thinking is correct. Heritage can be used for languages. see http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/heritage

the meaning "A tradition; something that can be passed down from preceding generations."
can be used for a language.

@ Ziko as I said before the expression mercantile heritage was odd enough to eliminate the option in the first go but good to know that heritage can also be used wrt a language

@ Vercules Thanks for the link

Unique among the Romance languages, Portuguese features days that are not named but numbered, evidence of their strong mercantile heritage.

b. features days that are not named but numbered, evidence of its strong mercantile heritage

e. features days that are not named but numbered, evidence of the strong Portuguese mercantile heritage

I was confused between b. and e. as well.

It makes more sense for it to read:
Unique among the Romance languages, Portuguese features days that are not named but numbered, evidence of Portuguese's strong mercantile heritage
(provided here Portuguese's is the heritage not the language). But since it is the language in this context it makes no sense.

Unique among the Romance languages, Portuguese features days that are not named but numbered, evidence of Portugual's strong mercantile heritage

eg: Just like You can't say Chinese (as a language) strong mercantile heritage. You can say China's strong mercantile heritage.

Therefore, E was the better option for me.

Hope that helps
