"that" when used with "of" creates a possessive pronoun that needs to refer to some characterstic of the earlier studies, rather than the studies themselves. Additionally, it would be very rare to use "that of" when referring to a plural noun - we would usually use "those of". "that of" would only be correct if we were referring to some communal characterstic that the studies had as a group.

An example of proper usage of "that of" would be:

"Unlike that of earlier studies, the genre of Blassingame's study is..."

More likely, we'd see something like:

"Unlike those of earlier studies, the table of contents of Blassingame's study...".

In the posted sentence, we're comparing the studies themselves to Blassingame's study, so "that of" is 100% incorrect.

As an aside, we can definitely compare a group to a specific person.

The following are proper comparisons:

"Unlike most other hockey players, Wayne Gretzky was more excited about getting an assist than a goal."

"Like her co-workers, Melissa enjoyed a good drink at happy hour."

A is the correct answer as Blassingame’s study is compared to study of earlier work. "That" refers correctly to "study".

Unlike study of earlier work on slavery, Blassingame’s innovative study- seems correct, no ambiguity.

D compares Blassingame’s study with earlier work and thus, makes comparison not parallel.

Why is D not Correct?.

D is incorrect because the SC is not comparing the works. It is comparing the stuff the works relied upon or used for their research.

I disagree. This SC is comparing their works—Blissingham's work relies on records of the slaves, while earlier works relied on records of the White slave owners.

For example, "this car is red, that car is blue." The colors aren't being compared, the cars are.

Anyway, I answered D too. If somebody could offer more explanation it'd be appreciated.

In the problems involving comparisions... atleast 50% of the problems i have encountered are such where comparable things/nouns are not compared and unlike is the best carrier to confuse in case of comparisions.

pls both the parts as individual sentences and then you would surely be able to pick up right answer.

hope this helps

This question indeed compares the work and thus D should be the correct answer.

"that" seems completely misplaced here, weird that A is correct and D isn't

If what Goalsnr says is correct that the passage compares what stuff the studies rely on rather than comparing the works per se, then choice A should be: Unlike what stuff earlier works rely on, Blassingame’s innovative study relies .

This is simply not the case.

I understand this passage is from a set, sourced from some Chinese origin with a good chance that the QA is a typo.

Although the comments about D are right on their own, however, the ORIGINAL sentence is comparing THAT of earlier WORK not THAT of earlier RESEARCHER.
So we are comparing not the work themselves but a FEATURE of those WORKS. Therefore, D holds a change in the ORIGINAL meaning and A is the right answer.
In case that D was in the original sentence then it had to be the answer. Again not because A was grammatically wrong but because no answer can alter the original meaning.
Am I right?

D for me too.

Unlike is used to compare nouns. Correct usage is Unlike X,Y where X and Y needs to be referring to same kind.

I can find no justification for A to be the right answer. I think its D. Would nothave been very disappointed had this question appeared and I had gone with D on the exam. A is just wrong for me.

Let's rephrase and see if the below is correct.

Unlike earlier work on Physics, Einstein's physics study relies on experiment..
Unlike study of earlier work on Physics, Einstein's physics study relies on experiment..

The latter makes more sense that the former..

Seems as though you've reversed the intended meaning...

(i) unlike earlier works on Physics, Einstein's study on physics...looks ok and parallel.
(ii) unlike study of earlier works on physics, Einstein's study on physics....doesn't look ok, as the 1st part talks of study of
(earlier works ON physics)

The former (i) should be better than the latter (ii), right?

In any case, i think D is correctly paired than A even though I initially chose A.
Take a look at the diagram I've attached and post if you have further reservations.

I go with A,

Vineetk, exellent clarification. Whats being compared is the 'study'.

There is parallelism in A.

A. that of earlier works on slavery, Blassingame’s "that" correctly refers to "study"
B. that of earlier works on slavery, Blassingame in his wrong; compares works with Blessingame
C. earlier works on slavery, Blassingame in his wrong; compares works with Blessingame
D. earlier works on slavery, Blassingame’s wrong; At least IMO the problem here comes from the possesive Blessingame's; The example answer currently compares earlier works to this study
E. the earlier works on slavery, Blassingame in his wrong; compares works with Blessingame
