This could be either A or D.

A does flow more than D so I'll go for D

D also.

A is wrong because "that of" is unnecessary. It's not referring to anything.

This is a classic question. I think this is at least the third time it appears on this forum. Always gets a nice discussion going.

Re: SC # Blassingame’s innovative study [#permalink] New post 20 Sep 2005, 15:55
Close call between A and D, but I would chose A.

I don't think that "earlier works" can be appropriately compared to "study"
I think the "that" is need to make it clearer...

What is OA and OE?

It between A and D! My choice is D!

As A says earlier works - a plural form - the usage should have been those of instead of that of - even if that phrase were needed!

SO D it is!

Agreed on D!

A & B - that of is inappropriate
C & E - "Blassingame in his" distorts the parallelism between earlier studies and Blassingame's study.

Isn't it crazy. I picked D as well.

Unfortunately OA is A.

OA is A? Really? That surprises me a lot, because A clearly seems to be grammatically incorrect. Where is this question from, out of curiosity?
