Unlike the more traditional energy sources of coal, gas, and [#permalink]

Unlike the more traditional energy sources of coal, gas, and nuclear energy, energy from the sun produces no major problems. It produces no pollution and requires no transportation from foreign lands. It threatens no one with radiation dangers and is not controlled by powerful corporations. Therefore, we should encourage people to use solar energy.
Which of the following statements, if true, most seriously weakens this argument?
A) there have been very few studies of solar energy use by households
B) the cost of oil and gas could be regulated to make it less costly for home consumption
C) the cost of the equipment required to collect enough solar energy for a family of four equals the amount a family now pays for oil, gas, or nuclear produced energy in one year
D) most critics of solar energy are connected to energy monopolies
E) an effective way for families to capture and store solar energy has not yet been developed

E is my FA.
The passage talks about usage of Solar power for people and the statement points out the weekness that even with so many advantages the energy cannot be stored effectively.

My vote is for (E) as well.
If they cannot capture and store the solar energy then what are they going to do at night. ?

E here too.
These days I try to break the argument down instead of just answering it.
Summary of argument:
Conclusion: people should use solar energy
Intermediate conclusion: energy from the sun = no problems
Reason 1: Solar energy = no pollution and no transportation
Reason 2: Solar energy = no radiation and no control by powerful corps
Answer choices:
A = so what?
B = out of scope
C = maybe
D = so what?
E = maybe
Between C and E, E is a better choice. In C, even though the cost of collecting solar energy may be high, it still does not weaken the argument because the other benefits may outweigh this cost.
E weakens the assumption that peopel are able to effectively use solar energy.

Hi
I stand with C. C is the best choice.
Why, explaination below...let us look at the 2 contenders C and E
Unlike the more traditional energy sources of coal, gas, and nuclear energy, energy from the sun produces no major problems. It produces no pollution and requires no transportation from foreign lands. It threatens no one with radiation dangers and is not controlled by powerful corporations. Therefore, we should encourage people to use solar energy.
C) the cost of the equipment required to collect enough solar energy for a family of four equals the amount a family now pays for oil, gas, or nuclear produced energy in one year
E) an effective way for families to capture and store solar energy has not yet been developed
For me, it seems simple, that the author compares energy from Coal, Gas and Nuclear energy to that from Solar. All these are obtained in a similar grounds. Meaning, one cannot produce energy from nuclear at home. Comparing Energy genereted thru coal etc.. with solar thru these plants.
If the cost of the production is so high that it does not seem economical for the family to opt for solar. What is the point if I have to pay a huge price, because it is non-pollutant. Is that the question that pops-out if the same is subjected to all of us.
Hence, choice C weakens the author's proposal the most.
Regards

I vote for E.
C. Let's say technology for capturing and storing solar power is available and it costs as much as a family pays for the alternative source of power (coal, gas, etc.) for one year.
The household will have to buy the equipment only once, and use it for more than a few years (probably get it on credit, too). The solar power equipment will pay for itself in one year and the benefits of solar power described in the passage (no pollution, no need for transportation, etc.) would count in as well. The family would make a financially adverse decision if it continued to use the regular sources of power.
E. If technology isn't available, it's pretty absurd to encourage ppl to use solar power!!! Like Anand said, what would they do at night?
