Unlike the Shiites, who constitute the other major branch of [#permalink]

Question Stats:
30% (02:02) correct
69% (00:38) wrong based on 1 sessions
Unlike the Shiites, who constitute the other major branch of Islam, the Sunnites do not await the Mahdi as a messenger from God, nor do they endow him with divine qualities or immunity from failure in judgment. (A) nor do they endow him (B) but they do not endow him (C) neither do they endow him (D) and they neither endow him (E) while endowing him neither Cant choose between A and C. Thanks.

i will go with A ....just for the sake of idiom...neither is usually in the format of neither ...nor ......but nor on itself can stand alone

Idiom error:
(A) nor do they endow him - correct - idiomatic - not X.....nor Y (B) but they do not endow him - use of 'but' is wrong as there is no contrast given (C) neither do they endow him - neither...nor is the correct idiom (D) and they neither endow him - neither...nor is the correct idiom (E) while endowing him neither - neither...nor is the correct idiom

The rule is this: 1. For correct grammatical construction, neither should always be followed by nor. 2. It is not necessary that nor is always preceded by neither. Therefore not....nor is correct construction. This rule is also true for not only...but also construction.

Tough one, right? I picked A because neither must go with nor.

I am not really sure about this question : as far as i know NOR can be used as a conjunction so i am going with A not really sure if NEITHER can be used as a conjunction !

I go for A neither should be in the first sentence (after Sunnites I guess) follow by nor.......so, since it is in the second sentence C D E are out between A and B, the second use but and a double do not that we have already in the sentence with Sunnites.......A fit the best.

between A and C.. i would go with A. I am not sure whether 'nor' can be used as stand-alone but i m pretty sure that "Neither" will only go with "nor" , it can't work stand-alone.

Comparatively A is the best option of all the rest. Plus the idiom doesn't necessarily need to be constructed this way, "neither... nor..." but could also be constructed in this way, "not... nor..." IMO

I picked A, because the Sunnites (X) do NOT.... NOR do they (Y) OA?
