Unusual tip for others who wish to succeed [#permalink]

Hey guys, I recently got a 700 on my test, not the best score compared to some ppl on these forums, but I still cracked the 7 barrier, and on my first try. Already wrote a debrief but I remembered one other tip that I wanted to share, it could be beneficial for some people, maybe not for everyone though. The tip is: Drink a fair amount of water/liquid right before the test, and don't take many bathroom breaks, if at all. (I didn't go to the bathroom at all during my test) This is what I did, which caused me to feel the need to pee throughout the test . While you might think this could be distracting, I think it actually worked significantly to my benefit! It forced me to stay extremely alert, on the edge of my seat, and to pay attention to every word I was reading. I felt the heavy pressure of time on each problem, which made me more willing to cut my losses and move on to the next problem if I couldn't solve it (of course, the psychological motive being, the faster you get done with the test, the faster you can get to a bathroom to finally relieve urself!!). So, I was very aware of the clock throughout the whole test, not just the last 10 questions. Constantly feeling like I had to urinate, I felt a bit like Spiderman, in that my senses seemed to be heightened and I felt like I was thinking twice as fast as normal. Thus I did not get sleepy at all during the test, even through Reading Comprehension. Anyways, that's my tip. Maybe it works for you, maybe it doesn't.

This tip is hilarious, I'm going to try it next time I take a practice test and report back. Is it worth it to pee your pants if it means a 200 bump in score? Yes, yes it is.

Sounds like a nice strategy. I think I'd need to hedge that..perhaps invest in some Depends so I don't have to worry about getting up in the middle of test.

i didnt know about this..but i was (accidentally) in a similar situation during my actual gmat...just because i had drank lot of water in the break and as the loo was occupied, i couldnt use it. i just decided to start the test and be over with it..but it totally screwed up my concentration in verbal...i was relieved to finish the test that for good 10 mins my disastrous score of 530 didnt seem to bother me.. this may have worked for some..but i wouldnt advise creating unnecessary tension during the test.. on the test day, there are so many things because of which one's concentration can be screwed..(computer freezing, AC too cold or too hot, felt pens not working etc etc..)..last thing you wanna do is add to that list by having a busting bladder..

I'm glad this unorthodox method worked for you, shorteverything. However, I feel that it's probably too risky for others to try this on the actual exam. Vibarora has provided an excellent caveat: vibarora wrote: i didnt know about this..but i was (accidentally) in a similar situation during my actual gmat...just because i had drank lot of water in the break and as the loo was occupied, i couldnt use it. i just decided to start the test and be over with it..but it totally screwed up my concentration in verbal...i was relieved to finish the test that for good 10 mins my disastrous score of 530 didnt seem to bother me..

If you score 700 with that strategy on the real test, then you could have scored even higher if you have used the bathroom, maybe 750 Anyway, nice story. Congrats for the good score.
