UPDATE: Good to be done with you GMAT! 740 (Q48; 42) AWA 6/6 [#permalink]
30 Oct 2006, 14:29
Hey all,
Just got back from the test center. Everything went well in the preparation phase and in the actual test. First, I wasn't sure if I should be happy or not after seeing the score, because I had scored 760 on both the GMATprep tests. But then, I am happy to be in the 98th percentile.
I'll elaborate later. Now for some shuteye.
UPDATE: Got my report - AWA 6/6 - truly I did not expect that. My only preparation - glanced through the introductory pages of Arco Essay Prep, but I did finish the AWA in the 10 or so full length practice tests that I took.
I focused on getting a point or two across rather than rambling on as I usually tend to do. Both my argument and issue were short - around 3-4 paragraphs of 4-5 lines each. For every sentence, I did a basic SC scrutiny - whether the sentence would have "A" as the answer choice as a SC. In the test, I finished within 45 minutes and expected a 4.5-5.0.

Judging by your posts in Quant you could aim for 50 easily. I'm sure your verbal is great, but I haven't spent much time there.
Either way it's a great score! Thx for your posts!

Thanks guys! You have been my sole source of motivation and competition . Here's my long-winded commentary about my prep and D-day. I was not comfortable giving advice. So, it's more like a diary entry than a point-by-point debrief.
Background
I recently graduated with my master’s degree. I started toying with the idea of an MBA after graduation, about eighteen months ago. I discovered GMATclub, searching for prep material. I generally pride myself as being strong in the verbal category (740 in GRE, which is still valid), but my first time here was a big revelation. I could not even differentiate between the five options for SCs, let alone find the right one.
I did not begin to prepare till this summer. Even then, I was trying to juggle my thesis submission and prep. It was late September when I started preparing seriously (as you can probably tell by my increased participation in the forums after that).
Quantitative Section
I was confident with the problem solving from the beginning. The challenge was to save time on the easy ones. I went through the practice problems in OG 10th and 11th editions, Kaplan, Barron and Princeton. Needless to say, the OG helped the most.
There were a few gray areas, especially probability, permutations and combinations, in which the club was my sole guide. But, even till the test day, I was not very sure about the tricky ones.
Data sufficiency was my pitfall in the quantitative section. I would constantly assume “numberâ€
