Urgent Question! (Low GMAT; 2nd or 3rd Round?) [#permalink]
04 Jan 2005, 07:57
Hi Scott and Omari,
I have an urgent question regarding my MBA application. I am applying
for MBA programs (HBS, MIT, Stanford, and Haas) starting in fall 2005. I
was planning to apply for 2nd round (HBS - Jan 5, Stanford - Jan 6,
Sloan - Jan 19, Haas - Jan 21). However, after having completed my
first GMAT exam yesterday with a 630 (Q 47, V 29), I am unsure. Should
I retake the GMAT in Feb., hopefully do better and go for 3rd rounds
or should I submit now? I am not certain that I can improve my verbal score much more because I am not a native English speaker and I have studied quite hard on the verbal already.
I believe, however, that appart from my low verbal GMAT score and my low GPA in
my first semester of College (1st semester GPA 3.0 gradually increasing
to last semester GPA of 3.8), I have good
professional experience (2 years NYC i-banking with Salomon focussing on Latin America & 3 years of entrepreneurship in New Zealand) and unique personal background (professional athlete before College, and various interesting extra-curiculars) as well as strong essays and excellent recommendations.
It would be great, if you could provide me with your opinion on what I should do - submit for 2nd round or 3rd? The sooner you can post something the better because the HBS and Stanford dealines are due on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively.
Happy New Year!

Sorry that I wasn't as quick on the response. Getting into the schools that you listed would be very difficult. Less than 10% of the student bodies of those schools have GMATs of 630 or below.
As you know, however getting into the schools during round 3 can also be tough. Nonetheless, because apps probably will not be as high as they were in 2002 and you have a unique background, I'd be inclined to really press on the GMAT and get your score up before applying.

GMAT Score after Application. [#permalink]
07 Jan 2005, 16:01
truthringer,
If Achuard had applied during the 2nd round, wouldn't schools such as HBS and Stanford evalutate his application and probably accept him pending that he gets a higher GMAT score in the next couple months?
Also, in his situation, what score do you see as "the just passed" score for him to get accepted to HBS, Stanford. 650? I am sure 680 will do the job, right?
Thank you,

No that type of contingent acceptance is very rare at these schools. Slim to none that it would happen.
The "just passed" score in 660/670 for those schools. We recommend applicants take a look at the 80% GMAT score to come up with a lower limit GMAT score.

Hi Truthringer,
Thanks for your feedback and sorry for my late reply. I appreciate your feedback. I indeed decided to apply 3rd round with HBS, Stanford and Haas.
All the best!
