Is salary earned during internship taxable in US

In India when I did my engineering (in India )which had a sandwich pattern (6months 1 semester training in the industry ) the amount was not taxed (probably it was to less to be taxable)

Can somebody throw some light on this??

Yes. If it's imaginable, it's taxable.

Yes it is taxable. I know if you are on OPT (typically after graduation from undergrad) then you get the SS tax back. Once you get to H1B status everything is taxable.

now my question is if we (internationals) come on student visa we can work for a year beyond graduation. But to do a summer internship do we need a H1B??

Also we would get our H1B only after one year of completing the MBA so is the income that we earn as students (i.e on a student visa) doing internship taxable??

Did u get my question?

If you do your internship under the student visa, you will only get your SS taxes back. Federal, State and Medicare is still levied on your income. Once you become H1B, all will be taxable.
