Can someone please explain me the usage of would. I have read at places that it is used in conditionals only, can someone please elaborate with some examples.
Thanks!

Just sharing my findings. Hope this will be helpful to you and others also.
'Would' is used mainly in four ways:

1. Hypothetical situation: In this situation it is used as conditional.

"If I were you, I would take the challenge" - this situation is a hypothetical one. In such hypothetical situation the form is used "....... were, ....... would ......"

2. Modal: 'Would' is used as modal.
"Would you lend me your car, please?" - Here 'would you' is more polite than 'will you'.

3. As past tense of 'will': In this situation 'would' connotes a future event in the past.
"Bill told me last year that he would join gym after exam" - In this case 'would join' implies a future event with respect to the time when 'bill told'.

4. Polite submission:
"I would request all the users to go through the forum rule before posting any comment." - Here I am making a polite request to all the users.

There are three types of "If..Then..." Clause. 2 of these uses "would"
Let me try to explain all of them -

Notice that the word "then" may not be actually there. It can be implied e.g. - "If I reach the market in time, [then] I will bring milk.

1.If <Present tense>, then "will + base form of verb"
e.g. If he practices hard, he will win the championship

2.If <Past tense>, then "would/could + base form of verb"
e.g. If he practiced hard, he would win the chamionship

3. If <Past Perfect tense>, then "would/could have + past participle form of verb"
e.g. If he had practiced hard, he would have won the championship

Also note that this list of "would" usage is not exhaustive but a frequently used one.

Lastly, one more usage of if..then clause -
If you like my post, you will press kudos ...:)
