PRIME: Pacific Rim International Management Education is a key component of the Marshall MBA experience — intended to broaden your understanding of the economic, institutional and cultural issues that relate to overseas business, markets, policies and trade. PRIME is now part of a comprehensive first-year Core program in the spring semester that includes coursework in global strategy and global economics.
The PRIME program culminates with a 10-day working trip to a leading international city, during which you and your peers will visit selected domestic and multinational companies and government institutions, to observe global operations and make a presentation to senior managers.
Marshall is a business school that strongly believes in experiential learning. The Seminar for Applied Portfolio Management Student Investment Fund (SIF) Program is a one-year commitment consisting of two three-unit courses. In these classes students learn the theory and practice of investment management through a merging of financial analysis, portfolio management and the actual management of the Student Investment Fund.
Through the Student Investment Fund Program, students actually manage the original endowment from Provident Investment Counsel. Instead of doing simulations, the students are responsible for managing millions of dollars and generating returns.
The purpose of this seminar is fourfold:
To provide up to sixteen second-year MBA students with hands-on experience managing a portion of the University's equity and fixed income endowment
To provide an academic context within which to understand the activity of security analysis and portfolio management
To supplement that academic training by interaction with individuals and institutions engaged in the money management industry
To produce and present an Annual Report which will provide a record of achievement in each of these areas.
APEC is a confederation of 21 Pacific Rim economies that encourages economic cooperation and promotes free trade among its members. The APEC Business Advisory Council, or ABAC, studies issues of economic importance and provides a business perspective on them.
Since 2003, the USC Marshall School of Business has been the only business school worldwide whose MBA students have conducted research for ABAC. Each year, outstanding Marshall MBA students are selected to conduct a research project on specific issues requested by APEC economies. The selected students extend their PRIME trip as a fact-finding mission to meet and interview business/government leaders for their research. The work associated with this project is conducted in addition to each team member’s GSBA 580 PRIME project and course work.
In November, the ABAC Marshall MBA team will travel to the ABAC CEO Meeting and present their findings. Their research will be included in the annual prioritized advice report that ABAC gives to the 21 APEC Heads of State.
Beginning in the fall of 2010, the USC School of Cinematic Arts will be offering a formal Graduate Certificate in the Business of Entertainment. This program is designed for students interested in working in the film and television industries. Film and television industry firms primarily hire MBA's to work in finance, entertainment properties marketing, strategic planning, and information systems.
