Using a Notebook versus Test Simulation Booklet and Marker? [#permalink]
20 Feb 2010, 14:50
from what i've read on this board, it seems like most people do all their problems in a notebook so they can go back and review their wrong answers. when do people use the test simulation booklet and marker (e.g. like from manhattan gmat)? i bet it's really useful to be used to this, but if you use it when taking cat's, you won't have a record of your missed problems! when does everyone who owns the test simulation booklet and marker use it? i'm especially interested in what you use/used when taking the gmat prep cat's.

Any news? I'm considering getting one of these (expensive) booklets, people say it's preferable to get used to it before The Day.

i went to kinko's and got 15 pages of legal-size paper laminated. i told myself i'd use them for cats (since i have 15, i dont have to erase) but i have yet to use any of them :D lol. i am using regular old loose-leaf paper and a pen like a caveman :D

I have read that you get trash your sleeves with the ink if you don't pay attention, so it's advisable to take the test using a black tshirt or at least clothes you're not affraid to damage

I had one and used it actively for my exam prep - when studying at home. Whenever I took a CAT at work, I just used plain pencil and paper. I don't think it's necessary at all for your prep. Sure it simulates the actual test environment, but I do not think that boosted my prep or my final score at all

maybe it didn't boost it, but could it have saved you from losing a couple of points? such as when you first used the test simulation booklet, did you feel like it was slightly awkward and may have affected your timing, etc?

nah, I really don't think it did anything for me! It did not feel weird or strange to use or anything. The pen worked just fine at home and at the test center (they gave me 3 there just in case). Just make sure that during any one section you do not need to write more then the 12 pages per booklet (I believe it was 12 correct me if I am wrong). Otherwise you need to exchange the booklet while your timed session is running. Make sure you exchange it between each of the other session so that you never run out of free space.

There are fair amount of discussions going around for noteboard used in GMAT. The question is no by the way, you cannot use your own pens. Everything will be provided by the test center

Isn't the board erasable? 12 pages for doing all the math is not enough!

The test booklet is erasable, but you are not given an eraser. The administrator will give you a new booklet.

It looks like this: http://www.amazon.com/Manhattan-GMAT-Si ... 0979017580You can only enter the test area with your ID used for admittance, nothing else. No pens, no paper, pockets empty, etc.

So we can't even bring a hankie to blow our nose if needed? Do they provide some kind of tissue to erase the board? What about drinking, peeing and an apple for nibbling during breaks? Are there banned? I don't see myself spending 3h30 without drinking a single drop of water

hanky - if needed, the test center provides you with tissues.
eraser for the writing pads - nope. when u need more space, raise your hand and the proctor/person overseeing the exam gives you more.
as for breaks, you get a break in between sections. go to the gmac website for the specifics.

i used the test simulation booklet and marker for the first time last night with a computer problem set. thank god i tried it beforehand! it completely threw me off, especially transfering my answers from the booklet to selecting the correct button on the screen. i set 2 minute time limits and i ran out of time on 5 problems, when normally i finish every problem in under 1 minute 45 seconds, and i attribute this to being unfamiliar with the marker and booklet. 1) does the actual gmat not label the answer choices as a, b, c, d, and e? 2) how does everyone use their scratch paper? do you guys write out a, b, c, d, e for each problem and then cross out/circle on paper and then select on the computer screen? anyone draw a grid down the side of their test booklet?

Well, you don't know until you try, but actually the whole experience is not that bad - the marker is really good - it's my favorite pen now and I have some good pens from all the vendor meetings I attend.
