As part of a unified scholarly approach, Symeon, an Eastern Orthodox saint often called “The New Theologian,” collected texts describing existing traditions and relayed them to his readers in a tone of great devotion and authority and borrowing from Asia some aspects of mystical practice.

(A)authority and borrowing from Asia some aspects of mystical practice
(B) authority, and borrowed from Asia some aspects of mystical practice
(C)authority along with the aspects of mystical practice he borrowed from Asia
(D)authority, borrowing from Asia some aspects of mystical practice
(E)authority borrowing some aspects of mystical practice from parts of Asia

Why 'C' is wrong? Explanation says "This option displaces the verb borrowed and is unnecessarily wordy." It doesn't look wordy. Infact it may mean that syemon relayed to his readers along with aspects of mystical practice (that) he has borrowed from Asia.

Please let me know if i am missing something.

Hi achiever01,

Ask yourself: How does someone "collected texts...and relay them to readers with the aspects of mystical practice"
How do you relay something with aspects of mystical practice?
Does that make sense?
It doesn't!

Structurally, this sentence looks ok. But remember, you must also evaluate a sentence and see if it makes sense.

(D) looks like a better choice. When you have -ING verbs like this (borrowing), try to flip the sentence like this:

"Borrowing from Asia some aspects of mystical practice, an Eastern Orthodox saint collected texts and relayed them to his readers in a tone of great devotion and authority."

This looks a lot easier to understand. The phrase "borrowing from asia some aspects of mystical practice" is describing the "saint."

The keyword here was "borrowing"--an ING verb. Immediately, you should have thought of what "borrowing" was describing.

thanks gmatpill.

if "borrowing" is indeed modifying saint...then it does make sense..

'D' looks a bit wierd to me but maybe 'D' is best in the lot.. thanks!!
