A) were borrowing - not correct since there is no linkage to other continuous actions.

B) had borrowed.... had been living - not correct since both events: borrow ideals from live persons happened at the same time.

C) simple past tense > looks good for an answer.

D) had been borrowing - not correct since both events: borrow ideals from live persons happened at the same time.

E) had been living - not correct since both events: borrow ideals from live persons happened at the same time.

Spot on.
OA is C.

This one was very diffcult for me because
General clarity wise , Grammar wise , Idiom wise , wordiness wise all the statements were sound.
The only thing different was their tenses.
How can you make out (especially in this one) which one is correct and which one is not.

B , D and E sound logical to me.
Is there any strategy or rules that you apply?

For this question, the emphasis i believe is on the sentence logic. Both events happended at the same time in the past. Hence it is right to use simple past tense.

We dont wqant to complicate things hence C is th best bet !!! where just past tense we dont want any past perfect !!!
