How is sqrt(x^2) = +x or -x ? In other words , why is sqrt(x^2) = |x|?

What if x^2 = 4 and x=-2 --> sqrt (x^2) = sqrt(-2 x -2) = -2 which is != |x|

I am confused on this. Could someone explain please ??

Didn't you answer your own question :). To put in a different perspective.

sqrt of any square is either a positive or negative value of the square.

so sqrt(4) = 2 or -2 as 2^2 = 4 and (-2)^2 is also equal to 4.
