Verb Tense...Confused.. [#permalink] New post 17 Oct 2010, 08:22
Guys ,
What is wrong with the following sentence..
"Profits increased 5 percent during the first 3 months of this year after they fell over the last two years."

According to OG...the tenses are not appropriate...It says that the verb tenses do not distingush between times at which these two events happened . I feel that they are very clear . Please throw some light . Also I have seen that I struggle
a lot in questions related to verb form , they can be very subtle . All the option seems very much possible. :(.
Any guide on how to check for these subteleties...Manhattan SC has very less on tenses.

I think you need to use "had" in the second part.
I concur with you on the verb tenses issue. Manhattan SC briefly covers the tenses part. I am kind of looking for some kind of source where I can read in detail about the verb tenses.

Actually I have only mentioned part of the original sentence...The following is the full sentence...

"The results of the company's cost-cutting measures are evident in its profits ,
which increased 5 percent during the first 3 months of this year after it fell over the last
two years.

I could figure out that the underline portion has some agreement problem...but it also has some tense
problems and the OG has the following one as the correct answer

"which have increased 5 percent during the first 3 months of this year after failing".

for more ref : Go to problem number 86 on page 728 of OG 12th edition...didn't understand their reasoning...

OG is right. An increase that occurred in the first three months this year is not to be expressed in the same verb expression with what had happened two years ago.

The earlier fall has to be expressed in - past perfect - as - had fallen - and the more recent increase in - simple past - as – increased -.

You can see how perceptions change after seeing the full picture.
One small request, when you want to learn just do not reveal the official reasoning. The natural tendency will be to justify that and you may not get the other dimensions. After some level of debate and discussion the OE may be released.
