(C) the more challenging strategy of three-handed canasta makes it the more popular with experienced card players than with
(D) three-handed canasta's more challenging strategy makes it the more popular with experienced card players than with
(E) three-handed canasta has a more challenging strategy making it more popular with experienced card players than with

Explanation:

Concepts tested: Parallelism, Comparison

First thing to note is that sentence starts with “despite”; so there must be two parallel actions or events or nouns associated with “despite”. The comparison is made with “four-handed canasta”, so the part after comma must start with something parallel to “four-handed canasta”.

The sentence has a second comparison where popularity of three-handed canasta should be compared with that of other versions of the game.

A) “Four-handed canasta” is illogically compared with “more challenging strategy”. Wrong.
B) Correct. Sentence has proper parallelism and comparison.
C) “Four-handed canasta” is incorrectly compared with the possessive noun “three-handed canasta's”. Wrong.
D) “Four-handed canasta” is illogically compared with “more challenging strategy”. Wrong.
E) “It” has no antecedent in the structure “THC making it …”. In the “more … than” structure, “experienced card players” is illogically compared with “other versions of the game”. Wrong.

(C) on both the enforcement of regulations and the availability of recreational activities
(D) on the enforcement of both regulations and recreational activities
(E) on both the enforcement of regulations in combination with available recreational activities

Explanation:

Concepts tested: Parallelism, Idiom, Meaning

Idiomatic use of both is “both X and Y” and in that construction, X and Y has to be parallel.

A) “Enforcement of regulations” is not parallel to “recreational activities being available”. Wrong.
B) “Both X and Y” structure is not maintained. Wrong.
C) Correct. “Both X and Y” structure is maintained. “Enforcement of regulations” is parallel to “availability of recreational activities”.
D) Though “both X and Y” structure is maintained, placement of both is wrong. It is incorrect to say “enforcement of recreational activities”. Here “enforcement” is associated with “regulations” only. Wrong.
E) “Both X and Y” structure is not maintained. The structure “both X in combination with Y” is idiomatically incorrect. Wrong.

(C) the artist’s music was more innovative than that of most of his contemporaries
(D) the music of the artist being more innovative in comparison to the music of most of his contemporaries
(E) the artist, in his music, was more innovative than most of his contemporaries were

Explanation:

Concepts tested: Modifier, Comparison

As the sentence begins with a modifier phrase which is in non-underlined part too, it is important to check the start of part after the comma.

A) Illogical comparison between “music of the artist” and “his contemporaries”. “Music of the artist” should be compared with music of his contemporaries. Wrong.
B) As the sentence is starting with the modifier phrase “A mixture of reggae and jazz”, the part after comma should start with “music” and not “artist”. Wrong.
C) Correct. “A mixture of reggae and jazz” is modifying “the artist’s music” correctly. Comparison between music of the artist and music of his contemporaries is correctly structured.
D) The sentence is unnecessarily verbose and awkwardly structured. Use of “being” is imprecise. Wrong.
E) As the sentence is starting with the modifier phrase “A mixture of reggae and jazz”, the part after comma should start with “music” and not “artist”. Wrong.

(D) but finally an outstanding Rembrandt collection was acquired at last
(E) to acquire its outstanding Rembrandt collection

Explanation:

Concepts tested: Grammatical construction, Meaning, Redundancy

As the sentence starts with “it took decades of effort”, underlined part needs to start with infinitive mode “to + verb”. Only option E meets the criterion.

A) “And” is used incorrectly. Parts before “and” and after “and” are not correlated and the sentence does not convey the result of decades of effort. Wrong.
B) The sentence sounds like someone acquired Rembrandt collection. “Their” has no antecedent. Wrong.
C) “And” is used incorrectly. Parts before “and” and after “and” are not correlated and the sentence does not convey the result of decades of effort. Wrong.
D) Inappropriate use of “but”. “Finally” + “at last” --> redundant. It is not clear who acquired Rembrandt collection. Wrong.
E) Correct. The sentence is grammatically correct and conveys meaning properly.

(C) Artist Julio Gonzalez has explored Spanish cultural themes, the art of whom is world renowned
(D) An artist who has explored Spanish cultural themes, Julio Gonzalez’ art is world renowned.
(E) Julio Gonzalez is a world-renowned artist whose art explored Spanish cultural themes

Explanation:

Concepts tested: Modifier, Meaning

A) Correct. The modifier phrase at the beginning correctly modifies “Julio Gonzalez”.
B) Meaning change: Here “Spanish cultural themes” are described as “world renowned”. Wrong.
C) Meaning change: The sentence seems to convey “art of Spanish cultural themes is world renowned”. Wrong.
D) As the sentence starts with “an artist”, part after comma needs to start with “Julio Gonzalez”. Here “an artist” is incorrectly modifying “Julio Gonzalez’ art”. Wrong.
E) Meaning change: Instead of saying “Julio Gonzalez explored Spanish cultural themes”, the sentence is conveying that “art explored Spanish cultural themes”. Wrong.

Explanation for each question is posted and kudos given to each correct explanation. Thanks to Zarrolou, Narenn, fameatop, and ankurgupta03 for participating in the challenge.

It seems questions were too easy this time and, perhaps, I need to put a few harder questions for the next challenge!

Here I would like to point out something in general.
One option should not be rejected just because it is in passive voice. Many correct GMAC OA have passive voice. Distinction between active and passive voice should be considered only when no other difference (e.g., adherence to grammatical rules, meaning change) can be found between two options.
