Having been bombed for fifty-seven nights in a row, the Blitz and the refusal to surrender London after it took on almost mythic significance as evidence of British citizens’ ability to resist the will of Hitler and Nazi Germany.

* the Blitz and the refusal to surrender London after it took on
* London’s Blitz and the refusal to surrender took after
* the Blitz and the refusal of the city of London took over
* London’s refusal to surrender after the Blitz took on
* London’s refusal to surrender after the Blitz took up

The correct answer is D.

I somehow am not satisfied with answer given. the sentence starts with a modifier - 'Having been bombed for fifty-seven nights in a row' ... so the modified subject should then immediately follow. However if the ans is D then that means London's refusal is the subject being modified. This does not seem appropriate.

I agree with that.
"Though the city had been bombed" should be followed by "London" rather than "London's refusal"
But as the explanation goes, [A] includes Blitz in "mythic significance" I guess that is why [D] gets more points to win

nope. it's still not clear to me. it should be followed by London, rather than London's refusal.

anyone with a different perspective?
