verbal search on GMAT club [#permalink]

hello GMAT club team,
thank you very much for supporting this site. i would like to make a suggestion. if we have a verbal question search which digs into the text of the questions posted, it will be very helpful. it will avoid posting a question again by someone who does not get the explanation. also you can save disk space for your server.
i am giving this feedback on verbal q forum to invite views from others.

I think this is a good point. Although I can see the points of starting a new thread too. Sometimes two different threads for the same question would sprung into totally different ways. I would think that if a question is recently posted, then it may be better to continue the discussion in the same thread. If a question was posted a long time ago, then I feel we could start a new thread.
What do you all think?
This would mean one needs to do a search before you post questions though. Not sure if it adds too much burdon. If you are an antive participator though, you may be generally aware about recent discussions and it may be less likely that you'd start a new thread for something that has just been discussed two or three days ago, so a search may not be necessary after all.

I think we do have a fairly good search tool on our forum. I couldnt have said it better than Honghu. thanks for that.
Again, lets be understanding of each others needs. Even if someone does post a question that has been discussed recently, we can direct the author to the old discussion whenever possible.

I think this has been brought up in the sticky above. Usually, I would recommend experienced members not to post previous links if a question has been discussed long enough ago because this will give a chance to newer members to participate. If the question has been discussed recently enough though, do direct the discussion to the older link. Just my humble opinion.

Would it be too much work for the moderators if they lock a new thread after putting in a link to another very recent thread for the same question, to ensure that discussions don't get to splitted into multiple simutaneous threads?

I don't see any problem to this if the discussion has been discussed recently enough. It will just channel the discussion more efficiently to a single place.

Paul,
for instance i posted a question today. i am almost sure that this must have been discussed earlier. i am looking for QA and explaination.
If a regular member finds my question he/she looks at it and says " oh how many time will they discuss this...", and goes to the next thread. i hope this site is growing in numbers. so a new member does not get a good response. having a search tool to fine a string in question solves a lot. i don't even have to wait for others to response, i get instant satisfaction ...

I believe in choices.
We should not restrict any user from continuing a discussion. We can advise folks to search first and then if they are not satisfied they can start a new discussion.
Whenever I searched on a topic and found that 4-5 people have posted their answers I was not interested in starting a discussion (if I am not satsfied with the earlier postings) on that topic. This is because many times people findout that it is a old posting and move on. However if the same topic is posted again the discussion starts. This has been my experience.
It is a good idea to have discussions (spanning multiple time frames) to be at one place. But I believe this needs some changes to the software such that two discussions are linked and yet the second discussion looks fresh or new.
