Winners will be announced the following day at 10 AM Pacific/1 PM Eastern Time. Good Luck! May the best and fastest win! John was one of the few people to get his hands on an advance ticket for U2’s North American tour – a tour that was delayed by several months due to front man Bono’s back injury.
(A) to get his hands on an advance ticket for U2’s North American tour – a tour that was delayed by several months on account of front man Bono’s back injury. (B) to get their hands on an advance ticket for U2’s North American tour – a tour that was delayed by several months due to front man Bono and his back injury. (C) to get their hands on an advance ticket for U2’s North American tour – a tour that was delayed by several months because of front man Bono’s back injury. (D) who got his hands on an advance ticket for U2’s North American tour – a tour that was delayed by several months on account of front man Bono and his back injury. (E) who got his hands on an advance ticket for U2’s North American tour – a tour that was delayed because of front man Bono and his back injury.
OA: C. Note first the decision between “his hands” and “their hands”. This is a pronoun decision, but one that requires some logical reasoning. Did these people all get John’s hands on tickets? Logically, that makes no sense - so they must have gotten their own hands on the tickets, leading to choice B or choice C. Then the difference comes down to “front man Bono AND his back injury” or “front man Bono’s back injury”. Notice the flaw in B - Bono and his back injury are not two separate reasons for the tour’s delay. It’s one event - Bono’s back injury. Again, logic prevails and the correct answer is C.

Congratulations! |
C is correct few people is the subject which needs a plural verb Also the cancellation is ONLY because of the back injury not because of Bono himself Also due to in B is incorrectly used due to can always be replaced by caused by and it doesnt work here. Due to is a noun modifier so we need "because of" here

IMO A. This dont have any pronoun issue. Also the tour was delayed because of front man back injury not by both man and the injury.

D and E are wordy

John was one of the few people to get his hands on an advance ticket for U2’s North American tour – a tour that was delayed by several months due to front man Bono’s back injury. (A) to get his hands on an advance ticket for U2’s North American tour – a tour that was delayed by several months on account of front man Bono’s back injury. SV pair OK, and 'his hands' is correctly referred to John (B) to get their hands on an advance ticket for U2’s North American tour – a tour that was delayed by several months due to front man Bono and his back injury. 1. usage of Their is not correct 2. usage of 'and' in Bono and his back injury is not correct (C) to get their hands on an advance ticket for U2’s North American tour – a tour that was delayed by several months because of front man Bono’s back injury. 1. usage of Their is not correct (D) who got his hands on an advance ticket for U2’s North American tour – a tour that was delayed by several months on account of front man Bono and his back injury. usage of 'and' in Bono and his back injury is not correct (E) who got his hands on an advance ticket for U2’s North American tour – a tour that was delayed because of front man Bono and his back injury. usage of 'and' in Bono and his back injury is not correct Answer is A Please correct me if I am wrong ... Thanks

C is correct answer ; [one of the] few people to get their hands on an advance ticket - is correct as their corresponds correctly to few people. In the later part - "a tour that was delayed by several months because of front man Bono’s back injury." is the best, clear and concise, way to write this clause.

The first thing to decide is whether the object is the plural few people or the singular one. IMO, for the object to be ‘one’, there should be a definite article such as 'the' before one. In the absence of that, the sentence means that there were few others who wanted the tickets. Hence the pronoun should be their rather than his. Instantly, A, D and E are gone. Between B and C, C is more idiomatic with the use of because of, which brings out the causal relationship clearly. C is the best

Thanks, I understand why answer is C now, as we are discussing about others as well including John who got 'their' advance ticket. In above sentence, is 'of the few people to get their hands' a prepositional phrase? Many thanks for answer.

C is the best Could you please explain the SV agreement concept with a few examples. I am not sure if people will appreciate this but let me try anyway Consider the following examples 1.In the popular sitcom 30 Rock, the one episode which was aired live WAS well appreciated.
This is a correct sentence as the subject is singular (one episode) 2. Boxing is a difficult sport; only one out of ten amateurs becomes pro. Here 9 out of 10 boxers DO NOT become pro. We are talking about the ONLY one who does. So the verb needed is singular. 3. The popular sitcom 30 Rock was one of the few shows which were appreciated by the 40-50 year old demographic Notice that "was" is used for singular verb 30 Rock but plural verb "were" is used for "few shows". The above sentence could also be re written as: 4. One of the few shows that were appreciated by the 40-50 year old demographic, 30 Rock was extremely popular. Here few shows were appreciated, not just 30 Rock alone. Hence plural verb is needed. Hope this helps.

Ans is C. "People"- the subject demands a plural verb; hence "their" not "his" Delay in the show was not caused by "Bono and his Back injury" but was caused by "Bono's back injury".

Re: Veritas Prep 10 Year Anniversary Promo Question #4 [#permalink]
18 Sep 2012, 14:06
QUESTION ITSELF IS WRONG. LOOK AT THE OPTOINS GIVEN. FIRST OPTION IS NOT THE ORIGINAL SENTENCE. ORIGINAL SENTENCE IS NOT AMONG THE ANSWER CHOICES GIVEN.
John was one of the few people [u]to get his hands on an advance ticket for U2’s North American tour – a tour that was delayed by several months due to front man Bono’s back injury.
Question is wrong. I choose option C among the option given.
I understand that the question itself is wrong. The first choice must be the original sentence. In the question given above, if you notice, the first option is not the original sentence. Infact, the original sentence is not here among all the five options available.
Looking at the question and considering the options, I will go for option C
Reason for choosing original sentence.
(A) to get his hands on an advance ticket for U2’s North American tour – a tour that was delayed by several months on account of front man Bono’s back injury. "on account of" is awkward. (B) to get their hands on an advance ticket for U2’s North American tour – a tour that was delayed by several months due to front man Bono and his back injury. "front man Bono and his back injury" it changes the meaning of the sentence (C) to get their hands on an advance ticket for U2’s North American tour – a tour that was delayed by several months because of front man Bono’s back injury. Correct - "because of front man Bono’s back injury" A tour here is the sentence subject and we need adverb phrase but not adjective phrase. (D) who got his hands on an advance ticket for U2’s North American tour – a tour that was delayed by several months on account of front man Bono and his back injury. "on account of...and his back injury" and changes the meaning of sentence (E) who got his hands on an advance ticket for U2’s North American tour – a tour that was delayed because of front man Bono and his back injury. "front man Bono and his back injury" and here changes the meaning of the sentence

Re: Veritas Prep 10 Year Anniversary Promo Question #4 [#permalink]
18 Sep 2012, 18:33
The Answer is A
You eliminate B & C because the pronoun used should be his and not their as the antecedent is John and not people. After which you eliminate D and E because they change the meaning of the original sentence. The original sentence says that the concert was delayed due to Bono's back injury whereas D & E suggest that Bono did something else to cause the delay besides having a back injury. Hence the Answer is A
